I don't know why everyone is acting like Toney isn't strong as hell and been training with well decorated grapplers and even submitting them. He knows what a rear naked choke is, he's been watching MMA for a long time. He may have possibly been practicing for a while. Even with no ground experience, a lot of grappling is instinct and strategy which is something toney is good at. He says if they shoot in he will throw them to the side, i believe him.

It depends on what happens in the fight with Couture. Couture will most likely have to apply a choke to get Toney to quit. I don't see James tapping from Randy's ground and pound. It will be humbling for Toney to get put to sleep but that won't be as bad as if a guy like Shane Carwin was standing over him beating his skull into paste on the octagon floor.

A prime Randy is much better pure athlete than a prime Toney.

Toney more skilled perhaps, but put them in a varied number of athletic contests and Couture wins easily, he was an Olympic class wrestler, which means he was one of the most athletic people in the world.

Randy has been boxing much longer than Toney has known what grappling is, do you think that means Randy will outbox him?

Randy grappling is like chess, Toney grappling is like the special olympics.

Toney is a better ATHLETE than Couture? Do you even have ANY idea what the word athlete means?

A person possessing the natural or acquired traits, such as strength, agility, and endurance, that are necessary for physical exercise or sports, especially those performed in competitive contexts.

Fat ass James Toney who primarily stands still and shoulder rolls his entire boxing matches is a greater ATHLETE than Couture? Couture the guy who did the eco challenge? Couture the guy with great success at two different sports as opposed to one? Couture who can actually RUN if he needed to?

Give me a break. Toney is by far the superior boxer. He isn't even close to the superior athlete. The guy is obviously at least 30 lbs overweight with pure fat for christ's sake.

You exemplify ignorance if you don't think that is a true statement.

Toney is an All Time Great Boxer, does that mean he was one of the most athletic people in the world? I just want to understand the criteria you are going by.

Just because you are highly successful in a competitive sport does not make you necessarily one of the most athletic people in the world (although, at the very highest levels yes it usually does).

Athletic ability is measured on a wide range of different physical tests. Speed, endurance, strength etc. A guy like Roy Jones is undoubtedly an amazing athlete. He played semi-pro basketball while he boxed. He was lightning fast with his hands and fast on his feet etc. He was clearly a gifted athlete. James is clearly an extremely skilled boxer. He is so skilled, in fact, that he is able to do very well for himself despite the fact that he is clearly out of shape.

But who do you think jumps higher Randy or Toney? Who can run a mile faster? Who can do more pushups? pullups? Who has the faster 40 yd dash? These are the types of criteria that measure athletic prowess, not "who has the better shoulder roll" or "who has the crisper, better punches?" Those two are criteria based on skill.

Overall hand dexterity? Sure, that is a measure of athleticism. Let's see who can catch the most tennis balls or something. I am sure Toney is more athletic than the majority of non professional athletes in the world and almost definitely more athletic in SOME ways than Couture, but as a whole it seems clear.

I mean, I don't have any numbers for any of these tests for either guy and it is still abundantly obviously clear just by having watched them both compete for so many years.

I have no doubt he is a talented individual who loves to fight but James hasn't been dedicated to anything in years. He is old, fat, past it and needs to develop a lot of skills.

It's possible that he has been genuinely training for a year and has added to his excellent striking skills BUT with James you never know until he weighs in and enters the ring. Until then the jury is always out on him. Out of 10 or so heavyweight bouts he probably trained for 2 or 3 at best. If he trys to rely on skills and toughness then he may be found wanting as he realises MMA is a different sort of skill/toughness.

They are both top athletes. Toney used to play American Football to some degree. I believe he was decent. Not sure though.

Usually it would, but Toney was always such a outlier in terms of having trouble staying in shape.

I suppose it depends on how narrowly or broadly you define athletic, maybe I am being a bit too general, but Randy was a world class athlete.

Toney is just out of shape. To say he isn't a tremendous athlete is pure stupidity.
