i think kessler would still lose but put up a much better fight than pavlik. Unlike pavlik, kessler has great hand speed plus very good foot work
I would like to see this fight. Kessler will give Hopkins a lot more trouble than Pavlik did. However, it will still no be easy for Mikkel. Hopkins is actually a huge guy - he may have fought at M for many years, but he was almost always way physically supirior to his opponents. Now at LHW he is still a big guy. No matter what these guys report to boxrec Bernard is a huge guy: This content is protected Compare that to Calzaghe-Kessler: This content is protected Hopkins would be almost half a head taller than Kessler and have hd time to grow into LHW (as he showed again in the Pavlik fight by outweighing Kelly by 13 pounds). Would be a tough night for Kessler and I'm going with Bernard in a close fight. I would not be surprised if Kessler won though because he is an excellent boxer.
seeing that hopkins neutralized calzaghe's and pavlik's jabs, i'd be inclined to think hopkins would do the same to kessler.
Speedy, intelligent, powerful, good on the aggressive, defensive and counter side, not one-dimensional. But still pretty much about jab and straight punches, that's something BHop really likes. Calzaghe gave him trouble taking away the jab, Mikkel responded with the uppercut. Joe took away the uppercut, Kessler tried going to the body. Calzaghe hurt him on the body and Mikkel became clueless. But still throwing in the 12th... despite being outclassed, he was still there... So competitive to win maybe 3-4 rounds maybe, yes. But the old fox most definitely takes this one. Kessler beats every other fighter around these weights (except Calzaghe).
calzaghe and jones aint interested so that has got to be the next best thing.kessler or possibly dawson.
Before the fight took place, (and I sat for 12 rounds of boxing in a total state of awe), I thought Pavlik would eke out a decision due to Hopkins gassing (like he did against Calzaghe); however, I remember an interview during the build up, where Hopkins talked about the kind of puncher Pavlik was: that Pavlik throws straighter, technically better punches than Taylor, and that Hopkins respected Kelly for beating Taylor the only way he could; but, he also seemed to imply that might not be such an advantage against him (Hopkins). I believe there's this saying, that fighting an amateur can be more dangerous than a professional, because the amateur is unpredictable, but you know what the professional will do. For a counterpuncher like Hopkins, I believe this applies: it doesn't seem like Taylor can properly throw a straight punch besides his jab, but he had the speed to get away with it against Hopkins, and he had Hopkins respecting his power. Calzaghe seems to be able to throw punches with speed from any angle, including straight punches, although not always with authority. My point is, basically, I think it's this kind of puncher Hopkins has trouble with, i.e. an opponent who's faster than himself, and also throws from unorthodox angles. It lessens the effectiveness not only of his counterpunching, but also his defense. Kessler isn't that kind of puncher; he's fast, but not that fast; and he's technically sound, so Hopkins by UD.
Different fight to Pavlik...maybe not any harder or easier but different. Hops would murder Kess on the inside and in the clinch but his faster and more fluid style means he probably does better than Pavlik. Or least he will appear to.
I would like to see it, but I think Kessler V Calzaghe had the lowest show time figures ever - so I doubt the TV networks would be too hot on the idea of this match up.
