Ward dominated Kessler. No way around it. Kessler had some moments when he caught Ward coming in or landing a jab- but honestly, I have trouble giving him even a round. Kessler looked confused or uncertain for much of the fight, and he never really was able to adjust to Ward's use of footwork and upper body movement as a defense in order to get his offense going. Kessler was similarly defensively ineffective, as he was never able to deal with Ward's speed or the angles he gave him. Kessler seems to rely on his gloves or the control of distance as a defense, as well as good jab to control the opponent. He had none of that in this fight. I wouldn't quite say that Ward schooled Kessler, but he came close. The head butts had nothing to do with it and in no way affected the outcome.
Regardless of what you think of Ward as a person, he was the better boxer, maybe not the better man, but it doesn't matter. I think Ward is a very sympathetic person, and if the ref was a hometown ref as Kessler said, it doesn't matter cause Ward was to fast, determined and precise, and he came with a perfect gameplan. Of course Kessler might have lost the fight in a different way had the ref taken more action, but the fact remains that Ward was too much for Kessler not only style wise, but also in other areas of the game. As a supporter of Kessler I feel sorry for him, but he just hasn't improved since the Calzaghe fight, and he has trouble whenever he fights a fast, intelligent fighter and he can't cope with the holding and clinching, he needs to be realistic and try to keep focus and rythm when things are not going his way for whatever reason. Ward was excellent and Kessler was not good enough and need to improve, lucky he's got Froch next time imo.
Goosen has sounded and looked remorseful for the last day or so, and even in the ring he looked at Kessler with a sad look. The look of a crook who knows he is in on something bad. He apparently knew that the plan was to secure the referee and head-but Kessler's face to kingdom comes.... Ward executed without hesitation.
You got to give him some credit. It's true that the ref was biased though and Ward got away with a lot of things. Hatton-Tszyu anyone? Makes it a good win but not great.
Ward won the rounds before the headbutts convincingly, there is no need to speculate how the fight would have progressed with a different referee, because the refereeing was not that bad. Maybe Kessler would have won if he didn't take so much punishment and punished Ward for his sometimes reckless approach, another mysterie to solve
a) not all. b) Calzaghe and Kessler fans have some overlap but are not 100% the same entity. you've already acknowledged this. don't let bad apples spoil the orchard.
Thanks for being honest and the butts were bad, but they actually saved Kessler from more punishment. This was a one sided fight.
Sorry mate, when I say fanboys I don't refer to actual fans, but to these personality-loving nuthuggers who come here only to express their man love for a certain fighter and completely disrespect everyone else. Yes, Ward was dirty, but he was clearly outboxing Kessler anyway.
Kessler=another overrated Euro boxer. Similar to all Euro boxers outside of Lennox Lewis, Vitali and Wlad.
A guy with Hopkins in his avatar is going to say that Ward got away with a lot? Half of the holding the fight as initiated or maintained by Kessler. And then he'd just stand there and let Ward punch him while he waited for the ref to break them. I know Kessler is a very good fighter, but how did this guy make it through 40-something pro fights without ANY notion of how to fight out of a clinch or on the inside. And ****, the Ref gave Kessler extra time between rounds a couple of times to get his eye checked. These grapes sure are sour.
