He was worse than awful last night. Allowed Briggs to take far far too much. He should have to answer for not stopping the fight imo.

Couldn't disagree more, and I have a real thing about late stoppages.

HE was still throwing back and didn't look out on his feet. If he shouldn't have been in there then you need to look at his corner first who were still telling him he could win!!!

i didn't see the whole fight. according to one the of GF posters this happened because the ref was a david haye fan and did not want vitali to have a new stoppage on his record

I'm sure you'll find the same poster saying how Mitchell was just about to KO Calzaghe before the ref stepped in!!!

The corner are to blame also. Look at rounds 9 and 10. Briggs could have been stopped at any point during those rounds on a mercy stoppage. He had ZERO chance and was just taking shot after shot. He had the same look in his face that he did when Lewis was beating him up and knocking him down. Someone should have stopped the fight.

He wasn't wobbling all round the ring and he was occasionally throwing back.

Nothing IJL could have done. The corner could have pulled him out between rounds and no-body would have thought bad of him but they didn't.

At least it saved us from Briggs telling us that he would have knocked him out had he been allowed to continue.

Do you realise Briggs had ZERO chance after the 7th round, where he took a lot of punishment and was saved by the bell. He took bad poundings in 8,9 and 10. He really was pummelled and at any point, IJL could have just stepped in and SHOULD have because the corner didn't.

Because IJL didn't step in when the corner didn't, Briggs is now in intensive care in hospital and has multiple fractures in his face. He is still in intensive care at the moment.

IJL really should have stepped in when Briggs was taking right hand after right hand and being pushed backwards. Rounds 9 and 10 were particularly bad for Briggs and a stoppage should have occured. Now he is in intensive care. That could have been avoided.

round 12 was insane. briggs just standing there taking flush punch after flush punch, without even givin the pretence of firing back. why the ref or corner didnt pull him out is beyond me

Agreed. Now Briggs is in intensive care and people are still saying "there was nothing the ref could do" lol

fightnews now reporting that briggs is in a critical condition. Other reports of him having had surgery. The fight doctor is asking why he wasn't consulted during the fight and has said he would have stopped it after the 10th round. Briggs is seriously hurt and I hope he is OK. Ian John Lewis should have stepped in when the corner wouldn't. If anything seriously bad happens to Briggs, this will be terrible.

I blame the corner more then the ref tbh. It was a type of fight that called for a corner stoppage, Briggs was staggered on a couple of occasions, but it was a slow and gradual beating, Vitali didn't sustain an attack enough for Ian Lewis to jump in. He should've consulted with the doc or at least told Briggs if he didn't show signs of trying to throw back he would pull him out.

The corner showed no concern for their fighter really, absolutely pathetic it was. I'm surprised because i thought Eddie Mustafa would've shown more compassion and empathy.

When your fighter is taking a pounding round after round, can't really defend himself and isn't firing back at all, then what is the F*cking point of letting it go on?

    Stop your slabbering

He was giving a former lineal Champion the chance to change the fight with one punch

the corner could have thrown the towel in at any point

As I said, the corner were majorly culpable.

So is Ian John Lewis. He has the power to stop the fight, call the doctor, whatever. Instead he allowed Briggs, who had lost every round and was not going to win, take punch after punch, which has resulted in Briggs being in a critical condition in hospital. Briggs will never be the same and I just hope his condition doesn't deteriorate. If it does, I'm sure some people will still praise Ian John Lewis for his conduct.

I get the feeling that the referees are pressured out in Germany in the Kiltschko fights not to stop them for the sake of the show and to give the crowd thier money's worth.

It wasn't nice watching Briggs take flush right hands all night long. I just hope he's ok what with the reports coming out of facial surgery and the possibility of neurological damage.
