watched this again last night, what a top fight it was. young byrd had some great skills, relied a bit too muchon head movement but his technique was great to watch. and prime ike was an absolute beast, as this fight does show. very good fight between two undefeated top prospects. :admin:admin:admin @ The punch IKE landed at 2:10! That was a ****ing monstrous shot. If Wlad or Haye took that shot, then it's goodnight for them.
Ike was a beast his fight with Tua who was another undefeated prospect back then is one of the best heavyweight fights of the last twenty years.
i know ye, what a shot that was. it is a shame because a more experienced fighter in the position byrd was in, could have survived that round IMO. he spent too long trying to slip punches when out on his feet.
Ike was definitely a beast and one of many fighters that people think "What if"? Byrd landed a nice left that stunned Ike for a moment at the :49 second mark, but that left uppercut/hook was a beauty from Ike. I wonder watsup with both of these guys today?
well ike went crazy didnt he. and byrd, well his reflexes declined with time and he became less effective.
yup, agree with all the comments so far. Ike was a great what if, byrd was a solid champion. if ibeabuchi had the career we all thought he could have, this would have been considered his coming out party
it really would have. the guy was a fukin beast. the punch for the first knockdown was crazy. the 2nd knockdown was like a steamroller. the actual stoppage was byrd's fault IMO, he should have ran and clinched, not stood and slipped. but byrd racked up some very good wins vs much bigger opposition. especially leading upto the wlad rematch.
Beast is the only way to describe Ike, just look at him! A massive 'What if?'. I like the way Byrd tries to argue that he slipped or something!
Looking at this fight, then looking at todays contenders makes me weep:| Ike was a physical specimen and a true beast, look at his expression at the end of the 3rd round, he was a man fuelled by rage, shame he could only ever control it in the ring. Byrd was so skillful the fact he was a natural light heavyweight and could compete with everybody but the true super heavyweights was amazing.
Byrd was a light punching undersized heavyweight but despite the disadvantages he had compared to the much bigger and stronger heavyweights of his era he was never scared of anyone and even when he lost he always put up a fight and gave his all, great respect for Chris.
I know, it's ridiculous. Larry Merchant was right for once: (On Byrd) "He claimed it wasn't a knockdown, it was a knockdown. And he never. Stopped. Bitching."
:good he did put up a fight, even with his feather fists he was still willing to slip and trade when in trouble. i know vitali suffered an injury, but the way byrd brought it to him in the final round was brilliant. he had some good wins at hw, but will most likely be but a footnote in the hw history, probably only remembered for his association with klitschko
