Being outside of the ring, I like controversy BUT for the numerous people inside the ring it must be a real kick in the gonads when 3 months of hard (sometimes a whole career) is flushed down the drain because of a wrong call.

It slightly annoys me that people are still saying he pussied out as well. Yes, he did quit but in this case he was justified in doing so, IMO. He could have went blind had he continued! A cut is one thing- losing your sight is another thing entirely.

I also agree with you, I love this idea and it needs to be implemented, IMO. Like I said before, I just hope that the 'replay ref' is kept away from the vicinity so he can stay impartial.

Controversy always makes things interesting but there is no other sport as harsh as boxing, IMO. Some only get one shot and get ****ed over for life being ignored afterwards.

  3. The problem of course, is that instant replays are not always conclusive. You aren't going to have great camera angles for these things at every fight. And they aren't always going to clear things up. Take rugby for example - some video ref decisions are highly disputed. That saud, it's great in other areas. I'm not sure that Boxing is a sport that really needs video replay decisions.

I think if there is doubt then you should stick with the original decision (just like the recent trials and future implementation of replays for disputable decisions in cricket). Boxing needs things like this, IMO, if it is to bring the casual fans back- people are easilly turned off how corrupt boxing seems and for me personally, I feel it would help eradicate a few stupid decisions that have been happening in boxing.

  5. You're starting to convince me...

Go on, give me a few examples of when this would've helped and you may just sway me...

As long as we don't start getting compubox stats judging fights and replays to see if a knockdown was a slip or due to a punch or any other things that would break up the flow of the fight or take away human opinion.

WBC fight but still pertinent: Soto-Lorenzo! That was stupid. I get pissy just thinking about it as it could have been cleared up on the night.

The recent Bradley-Campbell fight could also have been ruled a NC within 10 minutes instead of us still waiting for the official outcome.:good

    heres my view

there should be a officail at ringside whos job is to be a second officail. On cases of cuts he should have acces to Action replays and determine the cause of the cuts. That is his job to do also the referee can ask him for calls on lowblows and fouls thorughout the fight.

Too stop a fight the Doctor has to determine the cut bad enough to stop if a fighter refuses to fight on from an accidental cut he should be adjudged the loser by RTD

I don't fancy the idea of the official being ringside. As mentioned before earlier in this thread, what if there is some sort of riot when the decision is on him? He's best behind the scenes, IMO. I didn't think about lowblows being used in replays as well- another reason it should be implemented!

This is a fantastic idea as far as I'm concerned and boxing needs it to stay relevant compared to other sports.

  9. Good examples Losfer - It certainly would have been welcomed on those occasions!

Here's my worry though. GPater11093 quite rightly suggests an extra official at ringside who can assess footage in cases of cuts. But then he also suggests he is there for calls on lowblows and fouls. And that's the temptation isn't it. If he was just there for cuts then fine but if we start stopping a fight in the middle of rounds to check on a low blow then its going to ruin a fight. Even if he checks inbetween rounds, whats he going to do? Say to the ref there was a low blow unspotted during round 1 by fighter A. Then what's the ref do? Give fighter A a warning/deduct a point at the start of the next round? It's a fight. A battle of wills. The less the ref gets in the way the better. I watched round 1 of hagler v Hearns earlier today. Can You imagine some video ref analysing that and calling up Hagler for a possible low-blow??

That's my worry. - Too much intervention.

But if it's JUST for cuts to clear that up, then yes. Do it.

GrovesVDeGale, I think as long as the replays don't stop the fight then they can be brilliant for the sport and should be used. The IBF need to trial this and then tweak it where necessary as well before it's implemented completely. Between rounds a ref can say- can I rule that a lowblow? He then has 1 minute to receive the decision- more than enough time, IMO. Also, as I said, you could have a replay after a fight if the end is controversial- just like the examples I lised above^^^:good. If a fight is stopped due to a cut they can also determine there and then if it was caused by as punch or not.

instant replays would be goods, but should only be used if there is a complaint about a clash of heads and can opnly be raised inbetween riounds or if the ref sees it during the fight.bear in mind you get 5 mins grace if you claim to have been hit below the belt (weter intential or not)

  14. Agree on the cuts front.

I'm not sure there would be enough time during rounds to asses fouls properly. 1min probably isn't enough - It can take 5mins sometime in rugby to get a decision on a try. This might actually add controversy rather than eliminate it.

But, more importantly do the refs really need to be that officious? I actually quite like a few fouls and low blows. I don't like dirty fighters but I like crafty fighters. Analysing stuff the fighter does on the blindside of the referee inbetween rounds and then pulling him up for it might ruin fights. Like Naz used to do all sorts. He'd hit guys on the break, trip them up, low blow, all sorts but he was crafty about it. It was all about control. Keeping on top of the other guy and making it as difficult for him as he could. When he lost to Barrera the reverse happened. Barrera didn't stand for any of it and dished it back. Naz couldn't get any control.

Imagine if Duran fought khan. Khan would be faster, maybe even technically better. But Duran is a pure fighter. Duran would be roughing him up and letting him know its a fight and he's going to do anything to win and Khan would have to man up to that. It'd be a big and fascinating factor in the fight. But if we then had a man watching on video and telling the ref, Duran keeps stepping on khan's toes, he keeps holding the back of his head etc is that going to make for a more exciting fight?

The best refs are anonymous. Give them more power to rule on lots of small things and it becomes bit by bit less about the two fighters and more about the rules.

I think this is important. Because if they're going to bring in technology for cuts (which yep, is a good idea) it needs to be explicit at the outset that that is the ONLY thing.

  15. But if its for lowblows as well then there might be a problem.

E.G. I'm under the cosh, I need to buy time. What do I do? "He hit me low ref! He hit me low. Watch it on the replay!" - cue 5mins break whilst they watch the tape back and rule i'm talking shite. Doesn't matter, i've got my senses back, i'm ok. Game on.

Bear in mind you only get 5mins grace for a low blow if the ref acknowledges it. There's no need for the ref to then check it happened on tape.
