Being from Birmingham I've followed Frankie Gavin since his incredible amateur career and can not believe he has never become a world champion. I suppose this shows that even when someone has such a great amateur pedigree there not guaranteed success in the pro game. Gavin has a shot soon for the IBO title and is posting loads about becoming world champion. Eubank Jr did the same (although I believe eubank Jr will get one of the mainstream titles soon) If Gavin wins, what will it mean? Will everyone qualify him as a world champion? Or will it open a door for a title challenge elsewhere.
None of the 4 legitimate sanctioning bodies recognise it as a world title and I think you’d struggle to find any fans that do either, so no it’s not a real world title. It essentially means nothing if you win it.
No I don't, although years ago I expected it would become a major one. They were doing things right back then, while the WBA, WBO and WBC were up to their usual bullshirt, and their belts were held by a couple of the real #1's in their respective divisions (usually in combo with at least another one). But their value dropped in recent years due to putting up low level fights for vacant straps more often than actually deserving boxers getting a hold of them. They have Golovkin, Lara and Joshua as beltholders nowadays (very legit!) but that's where it kinda ends.
To be fair since there are so many belts flying around in boxing do any of them really mean anything. The only way it would if is there was one title as that guy is the legit champion. Champion : a person who has surpassed all rivals in a sporting contest or other competition. you cannot have three (or four) seperate champions within the same division. The only way you could legit say your the champion of any weight is if you hold ALL the titles at once.
Nah. Neither was the famed WBU title. Major bodies are far from perfect but the best want those belts, I don't see the top names chasing Gavin if he wins the IBO.
No. It's a minor world title that leads the pack of second tier belts (WBU, WBF, IBC). It's only carried as sentiment by some fighters (triple GGG) or as bling by others (Joshua, Eubank Jr). Most fighters would not even pay the sanctioning fees to keep it. It is the most likely to become recognised next but the whole organisation is in desperate need of modernisation and investment. I think the future will see a move away from alphabet titles and into organisation led performance and ranking based championships similar to the UFC model.
An IBO title is worth the equivalent of that WWE belt you get from toys r us for your birthday when you are a little boy. It brings you joy in your imagination but you know in your heart it’s plastic tripe.
No better with a belt from Matalan. As a pro Frankie has fought one world class opponent who carried him as he was so far of that level it was untrue.
He will probably lose or not make weight anyway......was never good enough to play at boxing the way he did, always thought he was pretty guff
The fact that Frankie Gavin is fighting for the belt kind of answers the question. That'll be a no then.
