Choc to give up shot at history over IBO feud

    BRAD WALTER

    January 5, 2010 .

ANTHONY MUNDINE is SET TO turn his back on the opportunity to win another world title next Monday night by refusing to fight under the jurisdiction of the IBO.

Instead, Mundine's bout with fellow Australian Rob Medley at Sydney Entertainment Centre is now LIKELY to be for the WBA middleweight international title.

The move comes after six months of tension between the Mundine camp and IBO officials since he claimed the middleweight world title from Tasmania's Daniel Geale in Brisbane last July.

Mundine also plans to relinquish that belt rather than agree to an IBO ruling that he fight Geale again before February 27, but there is still a possibility of a re-match between the pair at some later time. However, it will not be for the IBO belt as Mundine does not intend to have any future involvement with the organisation.

The bad blood between Team Mundine and the IBO follows the organisation's questioning of Mundine's points win over Geale. It is the only time Mundine, who had twice previously won WBA super middleweight belts, had fought in an IBO-sanctioned bout and he found it an unhappy experience.

It was felt that Geale's manager, Bill Tracey, was encouraged to lodge an official protest against the decision after allegations that English judge Marcus McDonnell was verbally intimidated by a pro-Mundine spectator.

Tracey also complained about the appointment of Queensland judge Derek Milham, who he alleged had assisted the Mundine camp to negotiate past bouts within the WBA, and raised questions about referee Gary Dean interrupting the fight on five occasions when tapes on Mundine's gloves came loose.

The IBO asked three new judges to view a replay of the bout and re-score it, with two of them awarding the fight to Geale. However, Geale's appeal was dismissed as the result had to be unanimous for the original decision to be overturned.

The bout against Medley will proceed but the Herald understands it will now fall under the jurisdiction of the WBA and will no longer be fought at junior middleweight.

The decision robs Mundine of the chance to become the first boxer in history to win world titles in three descending weight classes, but after being on target to make the 69.7kg division at Sunday's weigh-in, he may attempt to do so in the future.

After training up to three times a day for the past month, Mundine began a strict diet last Monday in a bid to drop five kilos before the fight.

Meanwhile, a decision on Roy Jones jnr's bid to have his first-round loss to Danny Green in the December 2 IBO cruiserweight world title fight at Acer Arena reversed is not expected until early next month. The treatment of Jones, a close friend and mentor of Mundine's, is believed to have had an influence on the Australian's decision not to fight under the IBO.

Jones wants the result reversed to a disqualification victory, citing illegal use of hand wraps by Green, and has filed a formal complaint to the NSW Combat Sports Authority demanding an independent investigation and hearing

    Guess thats proof enough!!!!!!!!!!

So 'he was on target' is proof enough eh?

Ladies and gentlemen of the prospective jury, I recommend we Amistad his arse and chain him to a rock and throw him overboard, never to be heard of again.
