Daz - correct Ranser - the whole point is that TV commentary can sub-consciously affect scoring, not saying that the commentary team was leaning one particular way or anything...
You were ringside Phil... What did you think of the fight. Not just how you scored it, but of the fight itself, the corners, the apparent intimidation. I watched it again last night. Thought it was the best fight we have had in Oz for along time. If you base it on rounds alone, i think Mundine slightly edged it, but because of the knockdown that wasnt scored, along with a couple of Mundine low blows and the ridiculous tape coming loose, i believe Geale has every right to feel robbed. I mean that tape was bloody insane, a point could have been docked it was that ridiculous. Oh well hopefully we see a rematch. But with Mundine fighting Medley after the Oct fight, plus with him struggling badly to make MW, along with the fact Geale is every chance to beat him second time around i do doubt we see it again.
The "knockdown" was looked at during the appeal and it was found that the referee had called correctly in ruling it a slip, I also on the night viewed it a slip. A lot of this stuff I have gone over a million times TBH but the initimidation was a non-issue, as Marcus reported in his write-up for the protest it happened inbetween rds 10-11, Marcus told him to **** off and then promptly scored the following round for Geale. The tape - well that's up to an individual ref how he wants to play it. I personally saw Mundine winning on the night but it was a close fight and I have no argument that saw Gealey winning it. There was no robbery just one of the very best fights I have been present at
Gotta agree Phil, Mundine by a whisker. Top fight. P.S I actually backed Geale so i wanted him to win.
As i said i dont view it as a robbery, but because of a few factors i mentioned Geale was entitled to feel a bit 'robbed'. I have no doubt Mundine did slip, but as commentary pointed out by letter of the law, he got hit and went down. But as i said without doubt best Aussie fight in a while. I mean they build up that bull**** Mundine V Green and make it the biggest fight, but you watch those two fights on tape and tell me which is the better quality fight. The intimidation, whether it affected the judge or not, shouldnt be going on and its a shame it happened.
With Mundine as IBO champ... assuming TeamKhoder and TeamGrange agree to postpone the set date of Feb. 27 for the rematch, is IBO then required to immediately place Mundine with another opponent (if its in fact Geales camp that pull the pin) to face The Man in a very set period, or do TeamKhoder rely on a clearway for Geales return contractually? Considering Geale and Mundine are fighting on the same card, Oct 21, its pretty clear that relationships are less than tense. In any case, will a contract of 'postponed rematch date forwarded to ...' post Feb 27 give a degree of favour to TeamKhoder for the sake of making a few squillion $$$$ before losing to Geale officially on the judges cards in the next proposed bout? Mundine will be forced to face the next mandatory, if its not Geale YES??? Or be stripped when??
As the fight was reffed, think Choc won very closely. But I still maintaint that Geale knocked Choc down and, had they scored it as a KD rather than a slip, Geale edges out the decision.
I viewed it as a slip as did the review panel and many refs present on the night. Called as a KD makes a very interesting point, turns it into at least a draw off the top of my head
Yeah it is a grey one. In my view, he was hit and went down (even though he was clearly off balance), but can understand the other way. I certainly thought it was contentious. You'er probably right and it would have been a draw. Anyway, that's not the way the cookie crumbled!
It was a great fight and if it was called a KD then Geale could/should have won the fight....dont know if he won the round or not as scored on the night. My 2 cents says it was a slip....nothing on the punch and as he moved back lost footing.
