The undercard has been raging for about five hours, @lewis gassed tipped me off about this earlier this morning but I just saw the message in time for the main event.

(at least the men's one; technically I think it actually is the co-main, but the vacant IBA female world flyweight title after this is probably not of much interest to me..)

 

Ibrahim Hashimovich Iskandarov vs. Mussa Ajibu, 10 rounds @ cruiserweight

 

The undefeated Kazakh, who started at super middle and leapfrogged the light heavyweight division, is yet to have any professional opponent take him two completed rounds.

His opponent is a Malawian glass cannon, who challenged Ola Durodola for the vacant WBO African cruiserweight title in 2017, and managed to knock him down but was stopped by the Nigerian in the following round. Ajibu's opposition has been of a much higher caliber (other notables including Flo Simba, Maksim Vlasov, and Ilunka Makabu) but they've all stopped him.

6-0 (6) vs. 28-14-5 (24 wins and 7 losses by KO).

Both happen to be 33 years old.

 

Iskandarov patiently jabbing his way in and blocking the awkward spring-up ambush right hands and wide slapping left hooks from Ajibu, then digging with body shots or spearing his face with rights. Ajibu is able to roll back with the shots and take off some of the sting. He's a slippery customer.

Ajibu far more active, winging big fat roundhouse shots up top, headhunting from outside in bunches of slapping punches, but very sloppy and disorganized, barely anything scoring. Iskandarov countering with stiff lean-in jabs into the face and, more often the lungs of Ajibu to wind him despite being tossed while Iskandarov moves on the backfoot or spiraling around the awkward Malawian. So far a perfect landing strip for the right cross has yet to present itself, with all of Ajibu's shoulder-dipping, twisting above the waist, and rolling aside between his shots.

Iskandarov giving Ajibu lots of respect, ducking away from his wide hooks and just flicking out counters blind, without committing in the pocket long enough to properly take aim. Iskandarov gets backed into the ropes and dusted with hooks across the back, and some incidental leather (and elbows) across the rear of his skull. Ajibu sweeping out at him and hoping something will stick, not really concerned with landing clean legal blows. At two different points in the round, Ajibu catches Iskandarov trying to dive in and clinch and spins him onto the canvas, a hip-toss and a gore. Very ugly round, in which Iskandarov might not have landed a thing.

Iskandarov down early in the fourth, but looked a push, and the ref withholds a count. Ajibu bowling in rights at the body from very far out, almost face-planting with the uncontrollable momentum of a miss. Ajibu trots in and daubs at Iskandarov's nose with some paint-brush jabs. Iskandarov tries timing him with a 1-2 and straight right down the pipe, but Ajibu is standing off and curling his upper body away 45°. Iskandarov tosses a high right hand at the forehead charging in, chin tucked into his chest, but it only grazes and Ajibu attacks with a triplet of uppercuts on the body, driving Iskandarov backward. Ajibu tickles the hairline of Iskandarov with jabs, and they clinch.

This is twice as deep as Iskandarov has been taken professionally. Ajibu putting up perhaps more resistance than his promoters (Shamo Boxing, who since his debut have also loaned Iskandarov out to co-promoters such as Beibut Shumenov) expected, and unfortunately for Iskandarov that might yield an end result of getting exposed and unburdened of his zero... unless he can salvage this with a gigantic equalizer on Ajibu's chin, but even then...lots of work to be done on the ol' drawing board..

 

If he springs this upset, Ajibu will be snapping a 34-month slump in which he is 0-7 (six losses by stoppage).

 

Ajibu with a classic African high guard, absorbing the hacking overhand power slashes of Iskandarov on his gloves, and then dancing around him flicking out accurate jabs between Iskandarov's eyes from a disrespectfully nonchalant stance, left arm dangling at his side between throws. Ajibu manages to slip a pair of shots and whack Iskandarov across the jaw with a left hook while ducking in for a grab-and-release.
