Joe Louis didn't enter a "mental shell" when he faced Bob Pastor and Billy Conn. Both of those guys were good on their feet like Usyk.
Deph perception in Joe's movement and the ability to connect from outside the blast radius is why those guys got cut down. To the untrained eye Louis is just a plodder.

I have to urge caution here.

Yes I am very impressed by what I have seen from Usky, but he was behind on the scorecards against Tony Bellew for goodness sake!

It it probably a bit premature to pick him over Max Schmeling, and it is definitely premature to start talking about him beating Joe Louis!

This. Not to mention Conn had faster hands, better timing, and better combinations than Usyk. Pastor had much better footwork than Usyk or anybody in the modern heavyweight or cruiserweight division that I can think of.

Bellew was never able to effectively setup a combination on Usyk, since his gas tank proved very weak last night. While Conn on the otherhand was lighting Louis up with 4 to 6 to 10, and even 15 punch combinations. I haven't seen a modern light heavyweight, cruiserweight, or heavyweight that could put together combinations like Conn could.

Conn at 1:57 landing a 5 punch combination on Louis and at 2:45 lands a 15 punch combination

Due to the weight difference Conn couldn't hurt Louis with one shot, but those combinations made Conn a more difficult opponent for Louis than the big guys, since Conn was hard to hit and his timing and handspeed were so good. In a different decade with a weaker champion Conn could've definitely been a world's heavyweight champion considering guys like Mike Weaver and Joseph Parker, who are far great were able to manage.

It’s not an untrained eye: it’s recognising that Usyk is both bigger and better than Conn and Pastor.

Usyk was just having a look. And he had an argument to winning 4 of the 7 rounds before the stoppage. Bellew is hardly domestic level either, he’s a capable fighter. And Usyk toyed with him.

I am going to be honest with you here.

Bellew did better than I expected.

I understand that Bellew is world class, and that Usky was figuring him out, but i did not expect Bellew to be winning more rounds than he lost.

I don't think that performance would fill Louis or Schmeling with trepidation!

I like Usyk, but I really don't see the justification for saying he beats Joe Louis.
He got tagged several times last night, it wouldn't have been a good idea to have been receiving those right hands off Joe Louis.

    Uhhh... no.

Pastor had some light feet and used direction well but he was not in the league of Usyk's work.

Pastor fought and beat much better competition than Usyk. The cruiserweight division overall was and still is a very weak division. The only person in the whole division that had enough experience and skill to challenge him was Bellew, which says a lot, since guys like Gassiev, Briedis, and Glowacki wouldn't rank during Pastor's time and certainly wouldn't have come anywhere near a title. By beating beating Bellew Usyk has sealed the deal on being the best cruiserweight, since Bellew would beat Gassiev, Briedis, or Glowacki, but now I have to see him at heavyweight before I start ranking him over proven top heavyweights of the past.

I will let you guys debate whether or not Usyk or Pastor was better. I am just enjoying this dudes skill in today’s era.

I am excited about what type of puzzle he presents in the HW landscape. He is one of the guys giving me hope and excitement about the HW division

    I feel the same way!

With Usyk's gas tank, I can't help but wonder how someone like Joshua will do against him, if the fight goes into the late rounds. Of course Joshua may get him out of there early, but if he doesn't...
