I'd stop Hatton in five - Witter by Ciaran Baynes, setantasports.com 28 February 2008 I'd stop Hatton in five - Witter WBC light welterweight champion Junior Witter told setantasports.com that Ricky Hatton is cheating his fans by not agreeing to fight him and claims he would knock out the 'Hitman' in five rounds. 'The Hitter' from the famous Ingle Gym in Sheffield insists that even if Hatton does not fight him he is set to earn big money this season, with a defence a unification bout with Paul Malignaggi in the offing before the end of the year. What Witter, and many British boxing fans, really want is a bout with the Mancunian fighter, who still holds the Ring magazine version of the light welterweight title. Hatton has always said he has no plans to face Witter because of the disrespect the Bradford-born fighter has shown him, but the WBC champion dismisses this. "The comments and the quotes he's coming out with for not wanting to fight are quite pathetic," Witter said on setantasports.com's boxing podcast. "He must really be scared. "It is the biggest fight in Britain for a long, long time and he needs to be forced into doing it. I know he's got a lot of fans and they really like it but they're screaming for the fight. "They made him. The people he's really hurting are those who really like him and made him have the money he's got. "I think he knows I've got the style to beat him. I switch, I hit hard, I'm a big puncher and I just think he realises when he gets in with me, he's going to get a beaten, get humiliated and get knocked out. "I think he realises that I hit as hard if not harder than Mayweather. "I think it would be about five rounds. I like to set myself a challenge. I know I can do it. He's good. I'm not saying he's not good, but he hasn't got the style or the ability to beat me. I've got the determination and the drive. It's just a case of people need to make him do it. "If he is to stay at this weight and claim to be any sort of champion, he has to fight Junior Witter." As for his immediate future, Witter admitted to still being unsure whether Demetrius Hopkins would be his opponent in California on March 22, due to his fall-out with famous uncle Bernard, but will definitely defend his title on the bill, before looking to unify the title. "Demetrius Hopkins is a little bit in the air, if he's going to step up to the plate as he said he was, but HBO have guaranteed me I will fight on this bill and they're looking out other fighters and other options," Witter added. "Malinaggi said the other day he wants to fight me so we are in talks about that fight. They mention Madison Square Garden which sounds perfect for me. I'm well up for that, so by the end of this year I want to fight Paul Malinaggi. "Gavin Rees is still unproven to me. He holds the WBA title, which is a good belt, but he's got to come through his mandatory. He'll probably want an easy fight after that. After that we can talk. "I'm not saying [Hatton's] not a big fight. I'm not saying there's not money in there, but there's plenty of other ways for me to make money and plenty of other good fights for me."
Just like he said he would have beaten Tszyu in 6 and after Hatton was beaten by Mayweather Ingle proclaimed that Witter would have done Floyd in 6:-( Just hyping what will be a decent match, but i think Witter is being over hyped on this forum, whilst the same people are doing a disservice to Hatton by labelling him ****.
There is no hype concerning Witter. The fact is his style represents ALOT of problems for any fighter. Thats why his only lost once in his early career. All he wants is his shot which his earnt.
witter hitter would stop him in 4 not 5, hattons probably lost all his confidence since moneyman tko'ed his ass in the 10th
I agree to a point with you but so to has Hatton only lost once, and to the best! I think when the fight happens because it has too, i believe that Witter WILL cause Hatton a few problems early, but if Hatton isnt affected by the Mayweather loss, he will come through and stop Witter late. I think Witter has very overated power, he is a hard combination puncher but since he stepped up in class he has only stopped Harris, who lets face it is no Chuck Wepner. Hatton has aswell been hit off a bigger puncher in Kostya Tszyu so i dont think people should doubt his chin. I maybe wrong and Witter may prove me wrong, but although Hattons stamina hasnt looked stella in a couple of his last performances i think his output will be to much for Junior.
Thats an easy cop out "..lost to the best". Theres a slew of GREAT fighters up at 47. Hatton will likely not face any of them and has said himself he has no interest in going back to 47. The only logical fight therefore is vs Witter.
I was referring to the best pound 4 pound in boxing and one of the most gifted fighters we are likely ever to see. I dont think he (Mayweather) is the best at welterweight, i think Miguel Cotto beats him and even after his loss against Paul Williams i think Margarito gives him a good scrap (dont think he would win though). Hatton should stay well away from the welterweight division, he could have a fight with Cotto that would sell but he would be butchered within 6, i think. I Hatton after Lazcarno should fight either Witter or Malignaggi next. Then the other fighter after, if Hatton wins and the other fighter is still champ. I would be pretty happy with that.
there are 3 certaintys in my opinion. 1. hatton is scarted to fight witter due the risk it involves in his career. 2. Witter deserves his shot 3. if the fight went ahead hatton KO's witter IMO
World Light Welter Ratings 1. Hatton 2.Witter 3. Harris 4. Ngoudjo (robbed against Mallig-***gi and castillo) 5. Castillo 6. Paulie 'i cant break an egg' Mallig-***gi Theres only 1 fight at the weight
I dont buy the crap that this would be the biggest british fight on a looonnngg time. Witter isnt a well known fighter with the general public. Hes a small fish with no fans. The only person who would make this a big event is Hatton...like he does every fight.
I'd have thought that the fact that the winner would have effectively cleaned out the division would make it a big fight. Hatton fans' staggering determination that this fight must under no circumstances happen amuses the **** out of me, perhaps they have a good idea of the probable outcome.
I would like to see it happen...but maybe u missed my point... it wouldnt be as big as some like to make out. Haye vs Enzo is bigger and better in my eyes
Of course it is thats why the Media interest in that fight is precisely squat and where 1 week away from the fight. Haye vs Mac although a great bout has garnered very little media interest at all. I live practically next door to the O2. Despite the arena being sold out no one is talking about that fight the way the media was talking about Hatton vs Floyd.
