Ideas and solutions to improve boxing in britain...

I always thought that would be a decent idea that TV could buy into a bit like Premier League Darts (I think). Just get 6/8 evenly matched fighters from the same weight and the winner gets a title shot.

 

Bring back Battle Royales.

 

Funny u guys said that.... i am drunk to be fair atm, but i was sat here watchin telly thinking about this thread, and it popped in my mind why no league, like footy or rugby??? Someone tell me, why wouldn't it work? (apart from promoters being the reason)... Is it really a practical idea or what? When it comes to "pollitics" in boxing i'm way, way far from an expert.....

It sounds very appealing, casual fans/sky i reckon would definitely be sucked into it after 18 months/2years, surely?...
Educate me as to why not (apart from ****ish promoters) it surely is the best way to determine the best boxers in the British Isles? No avoiding opponents like there is today???

Over the years surely BIG money can be made anyway after you are PROVEN... If even the casual audience see a "top 3 UK Pro League Boxing" fighter in PPV vs a fellow American/rest of the world fighter who is also a world champ it would appeal to them more? With the Footy/Rugby League menality applied to boxing???
As i say someone please educate me why this would be outlandish/stupid idea.....?:think

just my own personal opinions these...not expecting people to agree...



1. make the quality of shows better by adding a couple of amatuer bouts or even a womans bout...this was done on the undercard of bernard dunne's world title shot in dublin and it worked extremely well...there was quality throughout the whole night, and it was very interesting to see good amatuers...
someone said afterwards that there was hasstle because am's and pro's should not legally be on the same show, but i dont know about that...all i know is it made for a great evening of boxing.


2. never have a boxer fight more than once on any show / boxing card...
mike perez, our cuban based heavyweight, fought and won easily against two opponents recently in limerick.
the tv show hosts said afterwards that he should be congratulated for making irish boxing history....i think it was a disgrace for everyone involved.
the message i got from it was that it was the nearest thing to a set-up and publicly telling us it was...
perez's first opponent will not put up any resistance, he knows his part to play, cause perez has got another opponent lined up, and the show can't be ruined...
i would hate to see this kind of **** introduced on other promoters cards..
which neatly leads me on to....


3. prizefighter type events.
on eurosport i have seen local shows televised based on the prizefighter format.
these circus tournaments are extremely bad for boxing i think....for numerous reasons...
a) it is a serious accident waiting to happen.....an example, two guys meet in a 'final' ove very brusied and battered from the two previous fights...he is standing in front of a big punching southpaw...he has not trained properly for a southpaw, he had 7 possible opponents, how could he have trained properly for 7 different scenarios...this boxer is also very fatigued from the previous fights....he gets knocked out badly...do i need to go on...
b) taking the lightweight final as an example....ted bami v michael lomax....as a boxing fan i am delighted to see these two meet, but i want it fair, i want both in proper shape for a fair fight...not, as they were, one with stitches in his head and one with a broken nose, before the fight starts.....these fights should never, ever, under any circumstance end up on a professional record.

4. i like the suggestion of using facebook and twitter to promote events.
showtime boxing who produce the superb fight camp 360 shows use facebook to promote them...and they are very interactive, responding to all comments....
with so many people on facebook, it would mean the casual fans wouldnt forget about a show they may otherwise go to if they knew...

5. i hear what people say about competitive fights, but this will never be much different...two good high quality fighters wont normally meet until they are at their highest level...it's a business...money has to be made...
saying that, there are competitive fights on undercards..

6. on smaller shows, that arent televised....use the net to stream it live...stick some advertising banners on the video page if need be to generate some revenue to make it worthwhile....it promotes the show...

7. i would also love to see a return to the days back in the 30's/40's where public exhibition bouts were commonplace...these were esentially public sparring sessions....in america, joe louis took part in around 50 in the last two years of his career....
if this was reintroduced here...tickets could be sold for these shows at hotels and the like, like where white collar boxing is held now...people will know that these are exhibitions and only expect them to be such, but would like to see a boxer where they may not have the oppertunity to see otherwise...in a time of recession not everyone can afford to go to a big fight in the capital or equivilent...
would you go to see say a british champion in an exhibition down the road in a hotel from you for say 15 quid / 20 euros....i would....
the promoter / boxer wouldnt make a lot from it, but its getting paid for doing something they do in the gym for nowt at the moment...stick on a few amatuer bouts to make a show and the jobs a good un....just my thoughts...

sort you damn undercards out. make the whole event meaningful
the french have a league. and a championship. pretty successful as well...although it has the same [insert word here which imply's weight,power,prosperity,honor] as masters or english title. french journeyman mournir guabbas entered it a tough but limited journeyman and came out pretty well has a bit of a following in marsialle.

 

I would say it would help to have tickets cheaper. I've been to some events wehre the tickets have been at least £30 and there have only been about four or five fights with nothing above six rounds.

 

you see, that answer there is a lot of the problem in boxing today for me.
i understand boxing is a business, but to bring the sport to a situation where all that matters is that it's "cheap, simple and puts bums on seats and viewers infront of the tv" is disrespecting the sport.
prizefighter belittles boxing, it encourages fighting as oppossed to boxing...it does it's living best to take away all elements of skill...throw 8 boxers together, let them all fight each other regardless of styles, and forget about tactics or gameplans.
call them exhibition tournaments, called them unlicensed fights, call them anything you want except professional bouts.

That's another point I was gunna make I would never go to a small hall show that cost £30 but if it was £15/£20 I would go. Take a risk lower contribution levels but you would bring in more fans and that in hand could bring more advertising money and it could also most importantly bring in some new fans.
