Hi, I'm working on a family genealogy and I was sent this photo. Seems my Grandfather had something to do with boxers. I have no date for the picture. I know he was born in 1902 so I figure somewhere around 1930's to the 50's.

Can anyone identify any of the boxers in this picture?

    Thanks

The picture appears to be a behind-the-scenes photo from the film "Prizefighter & the lady" from the 30s. The film featured several real-life boxers in acting roles.

Former HW champ Jack Dempsey is the "referee" in the middle w/ the bowtie.

then-reigning HW champ Primo Carnera is in the upper left.

Then-Hw contender (later champ) Max Baer (also the star of the film) is in the top row, 2nd from the right.

Not sure who the others in the photo are ... they may just be actors &/or crew.

The film is notable for featuring a fight scene between Baer & Carnera's characters, which foreshadowed their eventual meeting for the HW title in real life about a year later.

Incidentally, the Baer from this photo is the father of actor Max Baer, Jr., of Beverly Hillbillies fame.

Agreed. The man next to Max Baer, top row far right, is the actor Otto Kruger. He also starred in "The Prizefighter and the Lady."

    It was filmed in 1933.

In all seriousness, I think that may be actor Walter Huston, father of John huston.

he was a step grand father, Max Pollack. He might be in that picture. I'm thinking 2nd row all the way on left.
    Going to ask some relatives

Great call on Walter Huston (bottom row, left).

Thought he looked familiar but couldn’t quite place him.

Found Max Pollack Match Maker on Boxrec - just one related promotion listed in 1934.

Can’t say that it’s actually your Grandfather though.

I know you said your Grandfather was involved in the movie business so the Boxrec listing is probably just a like named individual.

I'm not sure if he boxed or not. I can check around with my cousins. If he did box and that was him it was a short career 1934-1934 Ha. Thanks for the information :)

That's a great family photo to have. Nearly 100 years old. And those were three of the biggest sports stars in the world at that time. It was a big movie, too. Nominated for an Oscar for Best Writing.

Just to clarify, Boxrec lists him as a Match Maker, not a boxer. Good luck with your research.
