    1. As a private company the UFC IS subject to monopolization laws so the fact that they haven't been broken up suggests that actually they're not a monopoly. Or at least no one thinks they can prove it. American law does not break up naturally occurring monopolies, merely stops companies using their dominant market position to prevent competitors from entering the market. The fact that there's been so many people attempt to get into the market (and nobody can honestly blame Zuffa for Affliction, IFL or even Strikeforce failing) and that recently Bellator was purchased by Viacom makes the monopoly argument very difficult to sustain. And that's before you consider smaller or foreign promotions and issue of whether MMA is a distinct market or just one product in a bigger market (combat sports, sports, entertainment).

    And I can't think of a major company that has been broken up by American regulators in recent times. Even when they catch Microsoft engaging in monopolistic practices they didn't break it up like they would have in a similar situation in the early 20th century. They just fined them and forced them to change their practices.

    2. On the Friday Night Fights point - although ESPN didn't include the specific clip they did make the comparison in the nine minute piece and mentioned that some fighters on those shows make a few hundred dollars. So I don't think they considered a controversial let alone dubious point. And its a fair point in so far as comparing the two sports and looking at the question what's fair to fighters. People never acknowledge the difference in business models between UFC and boxing when citing Mayweather or Pacquiao's salaries.

    Would rather a starving artist than an egomaniac. One of the biggest issues in boxing is money and promoters, UFC doesn't have that problem, there's no middleman. None of these fighters seem to be complaining about their wage, its when you bring in the big bucks its hard to arrange fights anyway.

    Do you know thought that they are actually now being investigated for this? Its the reason why the Fertitta's refuse to comment on any ongoing Federal investigation (if they comment then the government can also comment on it).

    Considering that Zuffa refused to work with a different company (Affliction CLOTHING) whilst Affliction MMA was still in operation. Also consider that Zuffa used gurilla tactics with its programming basically sending Strikeforce broke.

    Monopoly isnt just about having ONE company, its also about having a company that has an unacceptable share of the market, and also about their business tactics that doesnt foster healthy competition.


    UFC is a promotion and Top Rank is a promotion. Its very fair and valid to comparing promotion to promotion.

    Whats idiotic is for the Fertitta to compare a broadcaster, ESPN, to a promotion like themselves.

    UFC is the middlemen. The broadcaster gets the PPV money and dolls it out to the promoter who will then give it out to the fighters (same as boxing). The closest exception to this would be Bellator which is now owned by the broadcaster.

    Actually several fighters have complained about their wage and asked for a wage increase. One example is Fabricio Werdum who didnt think he was paid enough by Zuffa. He was promptly kicked out of the promotion and because of this he was CALLED A REJECT BY ZUFFA AND CALLED AS NOT GOOD ENOUGH A FIGHTER BY ZUFFA (basically trying to ruin his reputation). The fact was that Werdum thought he deserved more pay, not because he wasnt a good enough fighter that he left the promotion.

    UFC is the broadcaster of its pay per views. As Flashjab said - there's no middleman.

    He has no answer (or style), hence his entirely predictable response. But then again idiots are just that so I guess it fits.

    He'll either do what he just did (make a reply that doesn't say anything of value (but then again that's almost all of his posts) and doesn't address anything said to him in any way at all) or he'll make something up that you said/did and when called out on this he'll revert to the former.

    Predictable... banal... and idiotic. Standard Scurla.
