Since it was just revealed that Ayala did not spar legendary Champion Pipino Cueves in the summer of 1977 but instead sparred Antonio Gin. What would have happened had Ayala at 14 (who gave Gin a good sparring match) had actually sparred the great Roberto Duran instead?

How good was Gin as a fighter? How did that one guy find out it was Gin and not Cueves? He just figured it out since Cueves was no where near San Antonio to spar Tony? I am glad they cleared it up. I didn't think Cueves would have let Tony beat him up.

Duran,Ayala's father, and anyone else involved would be sowing mailbags in Sing Sing for the last 30-odd years

If Mr Ayala was foolish enough to throw his kid in the ring with Roberto..

Maybe the kid hangs in there for 2 rounds, maybe 3.

    But what would that prove......

If it was a scheduled 10-Rounder,,,,,,,,who would bet that Mr. Ayala calls a halt to
    the gym-bout in 5-Rounds.

According to BoxRec, Gin had 3 professional bouts, 2 in 1974, one in 75...all at LWW.

Why would he need to spar with Tony in 1977? For fun?

    LA,,,

Box/Rec does not have complete records on many of the FECARBOX, Central American,
    Mexican and South American boxers.

Maybe Antonio Gin was a gym-sparring partner in San Antonio also.

??? in 1977, was Tony Ayala Jr. some sort of 'World Recognized Fighter'.

I had never heard of him back then.

    Maybe?

What is the website that lists that supposed 1978 fight he had.

There are no fights for Antonio Gin after 1975. Name a website more accurate than BoxRec, and I'll check it for myself.

Again, name the source saying that Pipino was nowhere near San Antonio in the summer 1977.

This is an interesting topic. Problem is this is 35 years ago now and too long ago to really find out if it was Cueves or Gin. Just a long time ago. The question I have is if it was Cueves and he was getting beaten up, one sharp left hook to the head or body and he would knock Tony down. There is no way he would be beaten up for long unless he didn't want to hurt Tony because Tony was 14. I am not sure what I think about the whole thing. I would think either it was Gin and Ayala did well, or it was Cueves who didn't want to hurt the young fighter.

    Mag145,

The only information that I could come up with, is that Antonio Gin worked out at the
    San Fernando Gym in 1977.

Would make sense that he could possibly be the sparring/work-out partner for
Tony Ayala Jr. At 5' 8" 145 lbs. or so, and a Pipino Cuevas fan who resembled the
World Champion in looks and in style.
