No it doesn't! It used to be sponsored by Stan James, until sky realised they were advertising the competition! ITV boxing is sponsored by mitsubishi isn't it?
I am sure Audley v Danny got 10m+ on ITV becuase they plugged it like anything during the champions league so it is possible to get the big audiences but ITV would have to see the advertising revenue to cover the costs. I am still not convinced Golf has a bigger audience base than Boxing, I would love to know on Setanta the comparable viewing figures for say the Players Championship which is the fifth major and a comparable boxing event which might be Haye v Klitschko. Infact I would be suprised if the Marco Huck fight on Sat did not generate more viewers for them than the Golf. But ultimately the selling point is subscribers + advertising v costs of buying and showing the event.
Its not all about viewers. The players championship is 8 hours of live action for 4 days. Haye vs Klitscko is 4 hours of live action for 1 night. I guarentee Setanta have more subscribers for Golf than for Boxing.
Unfortunately terrestrial Tv is not commited to boxing anymore. It is a huge shame because it is such a wonderful sport that millions would enjoy if only they knew much about it. A person (who doesnt watch sport generally) said to me the other day "I'm only interested in watching a fight if I recognise who is fighting". For me, this sums it up. The profile of fighters in the mainstream is utterly **** compared to earlier generations e.g. Bruno or Eubank etc. Fighters should be looking to make themselves household names by going on mainstream tv and showing a bit of personality. Why did HBO do 24/7? Answer: To get non boxing fans to know more about the fighters and develop an interest watching how they get on when they fight which ultimately leads to higher PPV numbers. Terrestrial TV doesnt show these types of broadcasts, therefore general public dont know who any fighters are, therefore they couldnt care less who wins and who loses and therefore they turn the channel over - its simple really.
Got to remember the impact of the internet on ratings as well. These days if there is a fight that you want to see, you can easily watch it at your leisure the next day (or via streaming sites)......there are a vast number of people who do this, and this obviously affects ratings. Back in the 90's when you only had 4 channels (and the evolving Sky), ratings were high because there was nothing else to watch!! Also during that era, getting a big fight on tv like Eubank V Benn or Tyson V Bruno was something you HAD to watch at the time, as you could rarely see the likes of Tyson on British TV back then, so you had to grasp the one opportunity to see him. Now you can see any boxer at any time online. Its the same with all TV, the ratings for Football, soaps etc are all down on the 80's and 90's, but it's due to an evolving technological world. There are obviously occasions where the ratings will be big and one-off buyrates (like Hatton) as he is well marketed, and appeals to the "football fan" mentality....unfortunately 95% of the other boxers couldn't pull a buyrate if it was given away for free!!! That is through no fault of their own, but if the media don't buy into you, then you are really fighting a tough battle.........
You guys need to stop sitting down with your tea and crumpets watching Coronation Street and Eastenders plus gay reality shows. No wonder TV gets great advertising money when you are all sitting around watching it. Outlaw such shows. Force people towards boxing. It's a fairly simple equation, there is not enough advertising money to be made from boxing, because there are not enough viewers to watch the adverts. Add in that fact boxing rights do not come cheap, especially where an M Hennessy is concerned, and you've got a problem.
I don't think I have ever watched a reality TV show. What saddens me is that more people are concerned about Jordan and Peter Andre getting divorced than the fact that this country is collapsing around us, with ministers being forced to pay £10k back in expenses! That is modern society. Celebrity obsessed.... but do they actually know what most of these 'celebrities' do? 'cos I ****ing don't!
Don't kid yourself, the ministers scandal is of exactly the same ilk as Jordan and Peter. Its for people who can only fix on small, simple issues. The main problem in this country at the moment is people, who are usually getting a very decent life/ standard of living out of the UK, going round telling each other what a **** place it is to live. I kind of like the fact boxing is a nieche sport. When a big fight roles around and you start hearing stuff like "Hatton is gonna knock out Mayweather" from knobs in the pub in pisses me off. Oh wait supposed knowledgable boxing fans on here said that to!!!!!!!!!!
Yep, like the "expert" who thought Paulie was going to knock Hatton out with "a 15 punch combination".:good
If you guys are experts what do we call the guys that got both fights correct, and Pacquiao to beat Hoya? :deal
