Adding on to the thread about Taking shots and the fighters health: Fighters have had the potential to retire earlier than they did. Tyson was in his early 20's, undefeated, undisputed HW Champion, most known athlete in the World, setting records and said to an audience that he may "retire." This was after the Spinks fight. Barry Sanders, NFL Football, was older but was still in his prime, HOF lock, incredible year prior to retiring and he got some **** for leaving the game at the top. Jim Brown, NFL football, was in a similar situation. Left the game in his prime. Most popular player in the league. Oscar De La Hoya used to talk about retiring in his 20's but each time he got to that age he said he would he pushed it back a year. How often do we see this? Benny Leonard I think retired at 28 only to come back because of money troubles but he did set himself on staying retired. Not sure of the perception but he was an ATG, RICH, and popular so fighters have retired before 30 who had that status. Jordan was older, I think 30, but he was still in his prime and left basketball for a short while to play baseball and got heat from fans and writers. So let's create a scenario based on right now and I'll try to make it easy on one point but difficult on another: HW Boxing is down in the States. So say there is this sudden burst of talent on the scene. A true top 10 talent pool like they talk about Ali's era. And in this era, you have a 19 year old phenom that captures one of the titles. And then goes on to unify the titles and cleans out the division in quick fashion (because he is old school and likes to fight every 1-2 months). And in his mid 20's, say 25, while he is still undefeated, HW Champion, the most well known athlete in the World...with they hype Louis, Ali, and Tyson had or even more given the media age we have today...he decides to retire. Division? Possibly some on the horizon. How is the fans/your reaction? And what if you were that person...would and could you retire given the popularity, the amount of money you generate each fight (and will say you are setting records)...but on the other hand, you understand the risk involved with fighting...notably, Your Brain. And when that is injured, when you don't have your mind working right, how is your life now?
i think khan thought he would of cleaned up 140 and 147, and retire by 28 after facing floyd and manny. that aint going to happen now is it. if he carries on losing actually, maybe it will happen.
I get it but I would be dissapointed cause I want to see a boxer get the max out of his career, if a guy retires prime it feels weak, you dont need to fight your heart out like ali till you are destroyed but something like Oscar did is totally acceptable. Its only a waste if the guy has huge potential, nobody gave a **** when juan diaz retired.
If a fighter got out at a young age with his wealth and health, then good for him. I'd be disappointed as a fan, but he's the one getting punched in the head for a living.
