I don't know. George Chuvalo had his competitive moments and the most you can say about him in comparison to Dempsey is he was bigger but not a harder puncher and Chuvalo had a better chin but Dempsey's would be good enough for this matchup

If by Baer you mean Buddy, then no. No chance at all.

    Think levels people...

The competition Ali beat proves he was on a much higher level than Dempsey. Factor in the huge advantage in height, skill, reach, and weight...and Ali is the overwhelming favorite

It's a fair enough point, and frankly, I didn't have a specific period in mind when I wrote the thread. I think a midway point is fair or for the fight to take place in Dempsey's time.

Ali had 2" in height, maybe three inches in reach, maybe less, twenty pounds in weight, not tremendous advantages .. Ali was no puncher, Dempsey had terrific whiskers and exceptional recuperative powers. I don't see Ali having this terrific edge in skill at all .. in fact Ali's skills were in many ways his weak link once his reflexes diminished .. he was not terrific at slipping punches, he often punched with his arms. He was basically a jab-right hand guy .. he did have great physical strength, an iron chin, tremendous stamina and a world class heart .. Dempsey had that too .. Dempsey had a ton of skill, speed of hand, two handed KO power, great leg movement .. his crime was horrific inactivity and career underachievement as a result .. I see it as a brisk 12 round fight, a decision for Ali with Dempsey having his moments like a Camacho - Rosario fight .. I personally believe that a 21st Century Dempsey trained and focused would be a heavyweight version of a prime Manny Paw in many ways .. coulda, woulda, shoulda ...

That’s reasonable...styles might favor Dempsey more than Ali

But like you said woulda coulda shoulda

One guy beat Frazier Liston Foreman norton Lyle young shavers and Patterson...the other guy beat Firpo Fulton Willard and ducked wills

The only reason I think Dempsey would be problematic would be from watching Ali/Chuvalo. Sure, it's clear Ali was the winner, but about the mid rounds, Chuvalo started landing his body punches and made Ali work. I think Dempsey would do at least as well as Chuvalo. And I think Dempsey, overall, was better than Chuvalo. Especially when we talk about speed, work rate and punching power. Although I do favor Ali in this fight, the Chuvalo fight are why I think Dempsey or Rocky would be tough opponents for Ali.

Can't really debate that one .. I just recently rewatched Dempsey Brennan on a large screen and was very impressed with Dempsey from a fight so many claimed he looked bad .. I didn't see it at all

He definitely was a great puncher and had a lot of talent..speed too

He just didn’t prove his talent against the 2 best fighters in the world ..like you said a big what if

I think Ali's era is pretty badly overrated. Frazier and Norton seem to be rated highly based on beating Ali which is circular logic. Maybe Ali just wasn't as great as some people think. And without Frazier's win over Ali Foreman beating him is a much less impressive achievement.

As far as Dempsey not facing the best of his era goes...many feel Ali lost all 3 fights to Ken Norton. He didn't exactly dominate his era.
