In my OPNION, based on what I've seen on tape, ( And I doubt seriously you could've seen much more, being his era was in the early 1900, and filming was relatively new) Dempsey wasn't good enough. Especially since he avoided the best black fighters of his era. And he probably wasn't the best of his own era. Much less someone elses.
