If Ali had become champion in 37 replacing Louis, what would his stance have been on the 2nd world war and been inducted to in to the armed forces? We know what the background story is to Ali and Vietnam and the exile. But would this have been a different Ali, happy to sign up and take on the role played out by Louis? Knowing Ali he would have had a opinion on the war no matter what people thought. Different times no doubt to the sixty s but how does a 1940 s Ali react to the conflict iyo?
Murdered HerolGee! That's a bit harsh. So u think he'd have reacted the same way as he did with the Vietnam war? Joe Louis seemed happy enough to play his role but Ali s a different sort. He may well have rebelled and said something along the lines of ::that war ain't nothing to do with us, was the European s that stirred it up "". Very unpredictable guy was our Muhammad.
Joe Louis didn't feel as if he was playing a role nor was he viewed as merely playing a role by the black nor white community. He felt that he was simply a regular American doing his patriotic duty and Americans perceived him that way at that time..
Of course and by playing his part i meant doing his bit for the war effort, just as millions of others did at the time. There was no protest from him, which leads me back to Ali. And how he would be in the same role.
Well, since we are all products of our culture and back then the Civil Rights Movement had not taken place and the Black Muslims were not propagating their rebellious philosophy geared towards American Blacks who felt abused -I would have to assume that Caseous Clay would have done exactly as Joe Louis did because he would have considered it his patriotic duty. BTW He would not have changed his name to Mohammed Ali.
yeh i'm not sure ali would feel the US had a right to enter the WW for the purpose of looting wartorn cities either
thats what he said anyway. a regular cit, apart from the off chance of getting lynched for talking to a woman.
I would say that considering his religious affiliation he was very predictable in reference to how he viewed white society and USA foreign policy. In fact during his time of inactivity he made money giving lectures where he clearly made his religious and political views known.
The "Nation of Islam" members were draft dodging during WW2. We can assume for argument's sake in this scenario, a 1940s Muhammad Ali would have done so too. Contrary to popular myth, Muhammad Ali didn't join the anti-war new leftie 'hippies' of the 1960s, his draft dodging was very much inspired by his leader, the "prophet" and honoroble Elijah Muhammad, who spent 1942 to 1946 in jail for draft dodging and encouraging draft dodging during America's involvement in the world war against Germany and Japan.
nocos he didnt wanna get lynched massa. difficult to make claims like that when u are on a bizarre fruit.
So in effect he could still have come under the influence Muhammad? I just don't get the impression that Ali would be quite like Louis in war time. I believe he may have spoken out about certain things and been quite vocal, and damn the consequences. So indeed if Ali had come along and got involved with elijha then we may have had a similar situation as Vietnam, with Ali becoming quite unpopular.?
He wasn't predictable when he changed his name from cas clay to Muhammad. I'm not sure a lot of people saw that coming.
