or one of the other guys who hurt him, would his chin still be considered iron / atg level

the reason i started this thread is the case of lennox lewis. people say he was chinny because of his losses to rahman and mccall, but he showed an iron chin in other fights

ali showed iron punch resistance in some fights but looked vulnerable in others like lennox

Lennox Lewis was completely knocked the **** out by Haseem Rahman and was stopped by Oliver McCall. In Ali's case,he was knocked DOWN by Cooper and got right back up(as well as against Frazier).Absolutely 2 completely different scenarios as,unlike Lewis,Ali was never knocked out or stopped(in the Larry Holmes fight, the ref stopped the fight because Ali was so shot,he couldn't even defend himself). Before anyone says it,the torn glove thing took SEVEN SECONDS.Not only did Ali have an iron chin, but he also had an iron body and great recuperative powers.

In essence, you're asking if Ali's chin weren't as good, would it be considered as good? Which is like some kind of double talk.

Well, for one thing, if it was Rahman's best right instead of Cooper's hook that caught him like that, I wonder if Clay would have made it out for rd 5.

Perhaps guys like Tua and Mercer could stand up to being caught flush like that, but there are precious few in boxing history that would. The flaw Lewis exposed was not his chin, but being caught like that in the first place. Lewis's chin is underrated on this forum and his defense is overrated. It was quite ****, but he was big enough, had good enough offense and was a good enough ring general to not have it exposed very often. He also generally faced opponents of not much skill, but a lot of power.

And when you think about it,Ray Mercer hit no less hard than Rahman and McCall, and Lennox stood up to all his punches. I agree with you that it was Lewis' defence that was a problem more than his chin.

If Cooper had hit Ali midway through the round it could well have been stopped - Ali was as hurt as Lewis was against McCall. As it was Ali had 2 seconds of round left - after 20 seconds Ali was still discombobulated, he stood up clearly not knowing where he was.
He had no extra time between rounds and was recovered in the minute - but had that punch connected 30 seconds earlier an over zealous ref could have counted him out ala Lewis McCall

I think it would be an almost impossible scenario.

If the round had been longer & Cooper dropped Ali with another lefthook while he was still hurt, i'm confident he would've got up quick & brutally stopped Henry on cuts later anyway.

If the ref had took the count from the initial left hook, Ali may well of been counted out as he clearly didnt know where he was 20 seconds after being hit - It happened to Lennox Lewis against McCall and no doubt it will happen again many times....

Ditto, apart from the fact it was Dundee who stopped the fight

I have watched the fight - He got up straight away but how clear was his head?? - He stood up on his stool clearly not sure where he was...

Now look at opremature stoppages like Ruddock Tyson - McCall lewis

And it is not inconcievable that Ali would have been stopped

Not impossible by no means, but improbable. Its not as if we have a precident to compare with

:goodThank you:good.Actually, though,we do have a precedent,my Celtic cousin.Ali got right up when he was knocked down against Frazier and recovered. This is another one of those "If there were 30 seconds in the round instead of 2" type of threads that pop up on the Classic regularly.Cooper fans:get over it!

No worries. What i meant about 'precedent' was that Ali/Clay has never ever been KO'd therefore its impossible for guys to say "What if.......". It wasnt about whether he gets up quick, although every KD he ever had he was up staight away.
