Pavlik is by far the best fight for him as a send off. A young, unbeaten, undisputed MW champ who he would beat silly. That would secure his legacy.

You don't secure legacy by beating smaller guys; you just make money and become very famous.

Pavlik's not smaller, he's just much poorer, thus needing his heavy size advantage at MW for effectiveness.

I'd edit that post to 'you don't secure legacy by beating overrated B level guys who have proven more ineffective at higher weights where they can't sustain a significant size advantage'.

Plus, Pavlik just becomes overrated after Calzaghe destroys him in 5 rounds, so it's worthless. At least a guy like Bute still has a mystique about him to the American fanbase and they can only criticise a dominant win so much, as Bute would maybe win 2 rounds and Pavlik would get annihilated quickly.

True...but size would matter...not only does Pavlik not seem to do as well above 160 odd pounds, but Calzaghe would outweigh him by 10 pounds or so, fighting at SMW...that is not insignificant. Bute would outweigh Calzaghe on the night by a couple of pounds, so Calzaghe would beat a big SMW, rather than a big MW. Kessler also is a big SMW...

...but all said and done...Pavlik is the big name and big star in the USA, so I'm sure Calzaghe would pick Pavlik rather than Bute or Kessler, even if they were all equally big and good and dangerous to him.

Difference is that Bute's handlers would love to get him a payday against Calzaghe in the UK(a loss against Joe is no big deal to his career and it raises his profile)and Calzaghe wouldn't shred him to pieces in ruining fashion like Kessler would.

Pavlik's handlers wouldn't dare make a Calzaghe-Pavlik fight anywhere on the glove, especially after they witness what's about to happen to an American legendary name.:yep

I don't think Pavlik-Calzaghe or Bute-Calzaghe will ever happen, I think Joe will feel excellent at LHW and stay there for a fight with Woods or another, but if either were to be possible, it would be bute-calzaghe and not Pavlik-Calzaghe.
