If Anderson beats Sonnen again, will he overtake Fedor as the GOAT, or not?

Hopefully there will be a better ref this go round. Poor Anderson took entirely too much punishment in that fight. This thread won't matter when Sonnen wins again.

Sonnen has 11 losses, and he is a top contender right now.

Looking through other top contenders right now in MMA:

    Alistair Overeem has 11 losses.

    Vitor Belfort has 9 losses.

    Dan Henderson has 8 losses.

    Rampage Jackson has 9 losses.

And these four are all top guys in their divisions. End of argument.

Not really. Mayhem is a great submission fighter, no?

I think Sonnen is a tremendous fighter, but I wouldn't feel confident backing him to beat Jacare, Palhares or Maia, would you?

No one who has been submitted by Chonan and Takase and being dominated for 22 minutes by Chael "the submission magnet" Sonnen could ever be considered the GOAT.

I personally don't rate a win over Chonan all that highly. I think barring gthe injury Silvia would have beaten him easier than he did the first time, so I expect a convincing victory. To me Anderson's best win was over Forrest Griffin, he made he look almost amateurish.

It's proabably out of the realm of possiblities but if Silva could beat Jones, he'd pass Fedor in my eyes. Not sure what else he'd need to do to surpass him, but it would have to be more than staying at middle weight and fighting retreads.

I should say that, on reflection, I'll still have Fedor higher even if Anderson does beat Sonnen again - but the gap is closing, slowly. I just got a bit carried away from re-watching Anderson vs Okami. Although I favoured Anderson to win, I thought it'd be a tough, gruelling fight, possibly a late TKO/sub after a close fight, was pretty blown away by how good AS was.

can't compare anyone with Fedor... when Fedor beat crocop, Minatauro, Randleman, Coleman etc they were dangerous dangerous fighters at their peak. Anderson is beating the guys he is facing... needs a few more competitors over a few more years.

If you consider Forrest Griffin Silvas best win, then the Anderson Silva and GOAT should never be used in the same sentence.

    Why's that?

At the very least Griffin is a gate keeper in the lightheavyweight division and he got absolutely destroyed by Anderson. But I take it you're not a big fan of his..Henderson was a bigger win in my eyes but it was a much more difficult challenge for Anderson. It wasn't so much that he beat Griffin but rather it was in the manner in which it was achieved. But apparently that's a concept a little above your grasp.

I'm sorry, but Forrest did absolutely nothing to win that fight. He could've made the fight much more competitive but decided to stand. ****ing stupid. Can't blame Anderson for taking advantage, but I'm not going to act like Forrest didn't look like ****.

And before you say it, Anderson isn't why Forrest looked like ****, Forrest is why Forrest looked like ****. I mean really, who the **** with a history of getting ktfo and no power, comes out and tries to bang with Anderson. Borderline throwing the fight. Anderson has made a career out of exposing bad, or no gameplans.

Which is exactly what great fighters do. Find another fighters weakness and exploit it.

Griffin got KTFO by Keith ****ing Jardine! By your own admission he is a gatekeeper. That is not a fight that you base your legacy on. Lol. Griffin is ****. Simply living off of one entertaining fight on a damn reality show against an even more marginal fighter.

But then again, that may be a little above your grasp.
