With fighting away from home, who you are fighting and what is at stake is far more important than the number of times you fight abroad.

While I like the guy, Ward has not taken a significant risk with the location of his fights. Record padding wins in Saint Lucia and the Cayman Islands don't make you a Road Warrior.

Distance in itself means very little. To get to Cork from Brighton isn't particularly difficult, but fighting an Irishman in the middle of March with a title and inbeaten record is a massive risk (Eubank-Collins). Likewise going to Germany to fight the unbeaten Rocchigiani is a big risk. I'm not going to bother boxrecing the number of times Eubank fought overseas, but in some high profile fights he took significant risks fighting away from home. Fighting a tune-up on an undercard against someone who isn't even from the home country is not comparable.

With Roy Jones, he only fought on the road as an opponent and name attraction. There was no way during his career that he was going to fight on the road unless he had to.

Calzaghe deserves praise for fighting abroad later on in his career (Veit as well as Hopkins and Jones), but also criticism for not going the extra mile earlier. He didn't necessarily have to, but raising his profile in other markets could have helped him secure career defining fights at an earlier stage.

You were having a go at Calzaghe for only having four fights outside his country when this is nothing unique to him. The majority of American fighters, for instance, never travel outside the US and even the most high profile American fighters of the last 20 years have not even reached double-figures in fights outside their own country.

It is ridulously hypocritical to criticise Calzaghe for something pretty much every other fighter does. If there was a massive difference between the amount of times Calzaghe fought in a foreign country and the amount of time the majority of other boxer fight in foreign countries you would have a point, but that's not the case is it?

 

Calzaghe would be undefeated against anyone Ward has faced either. What an irrelevant point.

 

Ye god forbid someone might pick ward over calzhaghe you dumb ****..

 

I like Ward and all...

But he makes prime Jones look like a world traveler.

 

How is a Ward-Calzaghe fight "not in question"?


Has anyone actually ever beaten either fighter? So as far as we know, either guy is capable of rising to the occasion when necessary.

 

He didn't deserve prasie for winning the fights, let alone sitting on a plane on the way over.

Fighting at home is no big deal. Calazaghe people point the finger at Ward for something that Calazaghe is more guilty of.

Calzaghe also doubles him in away fights.

Many fighers fight away early in their careers, not all, but many. Its in big fights where it counts and Ward has never done that. Most of Calzaghes world title fights were not at home.
You have been nullified there in that Calzaghe more than doubles Ward in away fights

 

Ward's biggest fight was in New Jersey. Do you have any idea the distance between Oakland and New Jersey? Your're wrong on this one. Accept it.
