We all know Azumah Nelson was a fabolous fighter, one of the great feather and super-feathers. He was a fighter with a lot of talent and ability, but he was all ways a little raw and rough around the edges. He showed how great he would become by giving Salvador Sanchez all could handle (for first 7 rounds anyways). So, if Nelson had a great trainer like a Dundee how much better would his career have panned out.
Not much better, he was an excellent fighter as it was and made the most of his ability IMO. He was very technically skilled fighter as well, just a bit of an awkward stylist. And I thought he gave Sanchez hell for a lot longer than just 7 rounds. The fight was basically even going into the 15th outside of the knockdowns.
^^^ i agree he made the best out what he had. The fight was certainly close, but i just saw Sanchez slowly taking over down the stretch.
nelson was an excellent fighter - truly. as an australian it still pains me to see jeff fenech truly robbed in that first fight.
for anyone not in the boxing game...u have to realize...dundee and other trainers are good...but they have great fighters....dundee took over leonard and ali after they were trained by others...a great trainer builds fighters from scratch...like manny with hearns...iceman with dawson....the cherry picking trainers are good but they get guys who are great and just tweak some things
I don't think Azumah should be judged on the Sanchez fight. Salvador was at the top of his game while Azumah was something like a 14 fight novice - who gave Salvador all he could handle. Azumah vs McGuigan would have been a Great fight but Nelson would have won. Azumah is a Legend. At Featherweight he had skills, power, and technical ability when in his championship years.
just used his name as an example:good, but i feel a trainer who could strategize better and with better management he could be slightly higher the all-time list. Plus, i would say that manny was a bit overrated, hearns was by far his greatest fighter and his win-lose ratio over the decade is not that hot. His best fighter these days is Wlad Klitchsko.
nothing personal brotha, but Sanchez was not at the top of his game. he was 23 when he died, fighters in general reach their peak 25-30 or so, depending on their lifestyle and how many punishing fights they've had. i truly believe boxing fans had not seen the best of Sanchez yet.
