As Klion22 stated above, Winky was the odds on favorite to win!! He also had just fought another very big Middleweight (Taylor) to a draw (someone who beat Hopkins twice).

    He was the betting favorite.

It's easy to look back NOW and say Winky had no shot but going into it, plenty of people picked Winky. This was a guy who hadn't lost a fight in like 8 years and his defense and jab was incredible. People thought he would be able to pump that jab and outpoint Hopkins. And that's logical. Age was also a factor, Winky was much younger than Hopkins. Father time could've hit anytime.

Hopkins is a great and if he beat Joe Calzaghe he probably be top 35 never top 10 way to many fighter who achieved more or have much better resumes.

That is true, especially on this forum. In fact, a few months prior to the fight I thought Winky stood a good chance(probably due more to my preference between the two), using the logic that most people used "Winky will just outwork him with the jab!". As the fight got closer it became obvious after actually looking closer at the matchup and the opponent he was facing, it definitely wouldn't be quite so easy. Hopkins was a worse style matchup for Winky than Taylor easily, even if Taylor was a worse style matchup for Hopkins.

But on what basis would you say that Hopkins was a bad match up for Winky? Well, outside of the obvious fact that Hopkins is a bad match up for anyone. :good

I mean he did things that he hadn't done in years. He moved for 12 full rounds. No one thought he had the legs to do that but he did.

He threw 640 punches. Considerably more than any fight he's had in years. People didn't expect that.

Winky was a guy who had a great jab and defense and people thought he would be able to land those against the recently immobile Hopkins heading into the fight. And i thought so too. I thought Winky would find success with the jab. I thought Winky could avoid Hopkins counter rights. But he couldn't do either.

Those are two of the reasons he was easily a worse style matchup. Hopkins was taken aback in the early rounds by Taylor's athleticism rather than his skills. Against someone like Winky, who isn't the type of fighter to overwhelm a bigger, defensive fighter like Hopkins, he was not going to have the same problems.

Hopkins is a counter-puncher through and through, and with his excellent defense and very good movement for his age, it was pretty obvious that a simple jab wasn't going to outsmart him, especially given his counter-punching ability and all the opportunities Winky gave up to the straight right with the southpaw jab. I originally thought Winky could outwork him, but it's hard to win a Decision when you're getting the harder, cleaner shots landed on you and your shots are not as effective.

I also counted on the fact that if they were to get into close quarters, Hopkins would have his way with him. The bout went more in the direction of the first part though.

I'd consider him top 50. No higher than that. If Calzaghe wins he doesn't belong there either. Neither guy would have a strong enough resume outside of this win to be ranked even close to the top 10. I'm not even sure if Hopkins is a top 10 middleweight, never mind all time.

Both guys have weak resumes. Therefore, no serious can be made for them to be in the top 10 based on one great win.
