Personally I thought Baer fought the best fight of his life and a awful dirty one to boot that he got away with.
I think Schmeling would have made the adjustments and beat him second time around.
    Thoughts?

I agree entirely. Schmeling of course was not perfect, but he was a technical genius, and I don't think he would allow himself the same mistakes he made/ let Baer get away with. Schemling was too smart for that. Probably still a good fight anyways though.

I think if it has come off around Schmeling-Louis I, then Baer gets beaten badly IMO.

I felt let down by how Schmeling fought Baer. It was clear to me that when he boxed Baer he had the better of him, but when he tried to out-macho Baer. Max put a beating on him. Schmeling needed to give himself space to box cleverly and to counterpunch. Instead he played Baer's game and of course the terrifically strong Baer had the victory. Baer was 100% within Schmeling's ability to beat, his gameplan was all wrong.

Yes. Baer is going nowhere. I don't think Schmeling had the firepower to dent him.

Wouldn't surprise me if Schmeling stopped him. He stopped a lot of durable guys.

If Baer turned up like he did in the first fight he beats any version of Schmeling.

That was a filthy fight, with the right ref I can see it actually being a very competitive affair.

It’s unbelievable the way Donovan simply ignores the back hands Baer repeatedly hit Schmeling with.

This is my point. Baer never turned up like this again. My opinion is that say he did I think Schmeling makes the adjustments and takes the victory. Hes the better fighter easily in my book.

You can be certain that Schmeling would study the film of the first fight, and come up with a better fight plan.

For his part, I can't see Baer bringing much new to the table, second time round.

I think that Schmeling winning the rematch, is a plausible scenario.

Baer was associating Schmeling with Hitler and that Nazi regime...and how they were treating the Jews in Germany, and you all know that Baer was half Jewish. This provided Baer with an incredible incentive I believe...and Baer was prepared to walk though a brick wall if necessary to vent his hatred and brutality on the German standard bearer.
