I think BJ looks good for being at WW. He looks kinda like he did in the 3rd Hughes fight. He definitely looks better than he did in the rematch to Hughes and first fight against GSP :deal
no offense but i think you're fooling yourself if you think BJ will cut it at welter the way he hopes too. sparking hughes is a world away from fitch - and then GSP. a part of me will be pumped if BJ does beat fitch because it makes him a player at welter. but realistically this fight is as far as he'll go it's not about "looking better", it's about knowing your limits. BJ is always a LW fighting at welter
fair call. but even if shields wins and BJ beats him, GSP will take it back. we love MMA because "**** happens", thats true - but **** doesnt happen across weights with fighters jumping in MMA like it does in boxing because you're balancing multiple disciplines, so your weaknesses are amplified. there are no great fighters in MMA who don't listen and adapt to their corner's gameplan. there's too much at stake and it can be lost in a split second not to be a smart fighter
He has got to pressure Fitch , make him fight on the back foot and walk him down , he has to make John Fitch make a mistake and present BJ an opening where BJ can use his boxing and hurt him on the feet . BJ Penn is one of the deadliest finishers in MMA , additionally if the chips are down and BJ is not having it all his own way , he has been known to go into idle mode and begin to head hunt and go away from strategy . In essence Penn must try and do what he done to Matt Hughes , establish an electrifying pace and keep it there , stun Fitch on the feet and avoid a TD at all costs . BTW , it wouldnt be beyone the realms of possibility that BJ secures a submission off his back , Fitch has a habit of leaving arms in precarious positions and over comitting from the top , BJ has a world class rubber guard and is very flexible , if Fitch switches off BJ could catch him . If Penn hasnt stunned Fitch on the feet in the first 3 minutes of this fight , it could be a long remaining 12 mins for BJ !! Come on BJ , go knock him the **** out bro !!! :good
Incidentally if by some miracle BJ does win , its interesting where he goes from there , i personally would like to see him back @55 against Maynard should he beat Edgar , once GSP beats Sheilds , Penn Sheilds would be a good match up but Sheilds would be off the back of a defeat and would need a win to secure a fight with Penn . Then you have GSP Penn 3 (down the line) , or Edgar Penn 3 (should Franky win) , who wants to see either of them fights ?? , and i doubt BJ would want it either , granted the pay day and accolades would be too much for Penn to turn down and he would no doubt take the fight but like ive said , we have been there and done that !! Then you have the monsters at WW like Thiago Alves & Carlos Condit who IMO would have little problems with BJ at that weight class ........ but that would be the level BJ would sit amongst with a W over Fitch . I personally would like to see him back @55 , taking his training and condition seriously with the Merenovich bros again , i think its only Edgar @55 who actually makes a fight competetive with Penn , or Aldo should he step up to 55 , who is a buzz saw waiting to carve open that division IMHO
Yeah well ALL of BJ's criticisms at WW have come from that one performance against Hughes and his two against GSP :deal Maybe GSP is just that much of a freak and he was out of shape in the rematch against Hughes. Look what he did in the other two fights against Hughes. He was way too fast, hit too hard and destroyed him. I'm not saying Im right, I'm not sold that he can't hack it at WW because GSP destroyed him....he has destroyed everyone he's fought!! Maybe Kos, Alves and Fitch don't belong at WW either because GSP completely destroyed and controlled them too? :huh
Bj has a pretty good stand up and a master level ground game. He takes down fitch and rear naked choke his ass.
Brilliant! why dont you get a Penn and write that one down....I thought you Scots were meant to be witty?
