It goes without saying that Jones will be less dominant/effective against hw's, and will be in far more dire danger of getting beaten, but to say he'd be a nobody is way off I think. In time, he could mature into a very very good hw fighter.
That's the numbers game and Jones is very impressive. But you are ignoring the fact that Cain & JDS havent been humbled by guys with a bigger size advantage over them as they would have over Jones. And without the grappling advantage, would his strikes, which are primarily used to maintain distance and wear people down, have the same impact? Of course they wouldnt, both JDS & Cain were able to impose their gameplans on guys who hit much harder than JJ in Kongo and Carwin. Say what you want about their technically ability, but both have GENUINE one shot kod power and bot tagged CV & JDS. Now JJ's power will improve, but not by that much, as I said, his strikes are due to leverage and bone on bone contact, via his preferred elbows & knees. Could he realistically affored to let these guys in striking/grappling range with those close quarter strikes, could he wear them down sufficiently with jabs/leg kicks 1st. This aint Tommy Hearns we are talking about in terms of striking power & reach advantage I have no doubt that Jones could be a good HW and be a contender. Let's just let him clean out the LHW's 1st before we say that
Spot on, although I was impressed with the Rampage win. I will be routing for Machida tho, as I cant stand Bones outside of the ring
I agree with all this but there's enough in Jones to suggest he'd be a competitive against either fighter. I'm not saying to do the superfights at this stage - he needs to actually clean out the division first - but the idea of Velasquez-Jones in particular excites me.
Me too fella :thumbsup I was just countering Popkins point that he can do it now against the ''big, lumbering, (by comparison) one-dimensional heavyweights?'' (Sorry PK, just disagree with your hypothesis) Jones my have the ability, well he does have the ability, but is still a baby at 24 and nowhere near fully physically developed Greg Jackson is no fool, JJ is a LHW for a reason, despite having the build for the weight. It's extremely difficult to maintain his high energy, grappling based style with an additional 10/15+ pounds of muscle against guys with another 15/20+ pounds on him. He wont be fighting & dominating guys the same way at HW as he does at LHW
So many faces in the division (Evans, Machida, Hendo, Davis, Lil Nog) so much talent.. If he holds the title through next year, I will be more than impressed. This is MMA.. Meaning any man can and will have his day.. I wouldn't put it past heavy handed grapplers like Hendo and Rashad to take his title. Machida isn't active enough with his striking to win.. But he has an effective TD.. Machida would be a fool to play the 1-2 game with Jones on his feet. And its a waste of space to mention, and, or predict Jones' HW title run.. We are years from him leaving this division. If anything, Jones would keep his title and test the waters in the near future.
Tis true, who can say what the years will bring to Jones' career which should last a long while more, but what he has done so far is unprecedented, coming into a highly regarded division, taking out one of the best prospects and two contenders, people are more in dis-belief than doubt I think.
Doing my best to walk the fine in showing respect for our current champion and former champs :!: I honestly can't pick anyone to beat Jones.. He knows what he is capable of, and breaks no rules in his standup.. He knows how to use that lean body anywhere in that cage.. Cage control and fighter IQ is just through the roof. The only men I see matching him in those two categories are Hendo, Evans, and Shogun.. Who is to say Shogun can't make a comeback?
Easy, just watch JDS (yea yea i know hes a big strong kid) last three fights. Now combine that with a 217-220lb (walking around weight im guessin) Jones and there you have it. Jones outclasses him standing up or on the ground. A lot of people here are shruggin off Jones cause hes not some 260lb grunt. "blah blah he wont be **** in the HW blah blah". Not really a big fan of Jones but hes the real deal Holyfield
JDS would snap Jones' arm with an Indian Burn.. He ain't touchin no top HW in the near future. Let's just hope his health is in tact when his body is ready for the division.
