If boxing was run like the ufc which aussie fighters would stand a chance of being title holders or even big names.

with the way the ufc is all the best fighters fight each other and leaves no room for bums in the main organisation. who would cut it?

Probably the same ones that have a name now Vic and Katsidis, the others wouldn't make it, UFC don't let them pad records with unknowns for 20 or more fights before they step up and get blown away like most of our fighters.

The UFC is only one belt of the MMA world though. So it would be like the WBC for example. There are many MMA world champions at each weight. The UFC guys are the most famous but are they the best ?

Fedor Emanlianko is not in the UFC and has never fought in the UFC and he is considered by most to be the Sugar Ray Robinson of MMA.
As Riggers has said the UFC is only one organisation although it does have the best fighters overall.
Back to the original question, if all boxers worldwide had to fight the best than only Vic Darchinyan would cut it imo. Katsidis/Mundine/Green/Bika/Geale etc would not cut it at the elite level imo.

Don't forget that all of the guys in the UFC have solid fight records in their sport. Winning medals at World BJJ, Sambo or Muay Thai championships means you are already pretty bad. MMA's and Muay thai's success has been beneficial for interest in boxing i believe.

yeh there is the minor competitions and there are some good names in some of the others but you'd have to agree that UFC is still a fair way ahead. i was really hoping fedor would come and fight lesner but didn't sign unfortunately.

I would agree that vic and kat would be the only ones with a real shot. It would be awesome if there was only one boxing organisation.

The UFC is better marketed, but as has been said already it is without the best fighter.

The other organisations are older in some cases and more popular in different regions of the world. It does not make them minor to the UFC.

The ultimate fighter made the UFC.

From what we see in the world of boxing, Vic Darchinyan is the only Aussie boxer who could make it as a big name if boxing was run like the UFC.

Guys like Choc, Katsidis, Green, Bika, etc could all still make it though, but they would have to prove themselves every fight. Even if they lost the odd fight, they could still make it as a regular fixture on the UFC, even if they couldn't land a title shot.

Take Katsidis for example, he'd be kinda like a Chris Leben type fighter. Ton of heart and can be devastating, though is less skilled than the premier fighters, like an Anderson Silva. But he still fights regularly on the PPVs and isn't a discard.

On a side note, I can't believe One HD are showing the Best of 2009 on TV tommorrow night. I don't even think that's even on DVD yet.

To compare Michael Katsidis with Chris Leben is a slap in the face...

It's great, can't believe they are showing a PPV live on free to air TV.

I believe Fedor is fighting Fabricio Werdrum on April 17.

On face value it may seem so, but I reckon it's a reasonable comparison.

Katsidis is no world beater at this stage, though hope he becomes one in the coming years.

Each to their own, but in my opinion, one is at the top of the division, the other is on the fringes.

i dont agree that ufc doesnt have the best fighter. maybe not the best heavyweight but GSP and Anderson Silva would have a lot to say about being the best fighter.
