If Burns - Katsidis had been on Sky Sports...?

allot more. opend up the Sun this morning when i was getting breakfast and it has 2 sentances on Burns vs Katsidis.

An equally impressive victory. Still casual sports fans didn't hear about it.

That's no reflection on Burns, it's just the way it is now. Boxing is a minority sport. If Burns had been around in the 80s or 90s he would be a big star in Britain.

I was watching the fight on Saturday with a friend of mine, not a big boxing fan, and he'd never heard of Ricky Burns. He didn't even know who Carl Froch was.

 

Katsidis was a much bigger fight than Martinez. Nobody gives a **** about the super-feathers except hardcore fans and Katsidis is pretty well known in the UK after the Mitchell fight. No doubt Box Nation will hurt fighters' publicity/future drawing power.

Yeah the Mitchell fight, that had 20 million viewers.

No casual sports fans know who Katsidis is anymore than they know who Martinez is, apart from maybe a few hundred West Ham fans.

 

I said "pretty well known." How many non-UK lightweights are better known than Katsidis? Marquez and that's it.

 

There aren't any. That's my point. Only boxing fans know who Katsidis and Marquez are.

If it was on Sky Sports, Ricky would have knocked Katsidis out – that’s how good the network is for British boxing.

I don't think it would have made that big of a difference.

 

no one really gives a **** about boxing apart from the hardcore boxing fans,the semi boxing fans only watch the big fights,loving boxnation but truly the sport will not grow on this channel.

 

I think we need to get behind BoxNation ... Sky Sports can **** right off IMO, they don't support boxing, they let top US fights slide that would draw in fans, they only promote non-UK fights if there's a Pacquiao or Mayweather now, they let Khan get taken to Primetime.

With BoxNation we are getting constant coverage and talk shows, Cotto/Marg II will get a huge build up. It's great for the sport and boxing fans need to spread the word with their mates.

The inclusion of UFC will draw in more viewers too but this idea of charging another £10 sub fee is a bad bad move from ******. It's too soon, he needs to generate interest first before trying that. Setanta had the lure of all the football to get the subscribers but if you imagine ... your typical football junkie has his Sky Sports & Movies package, it's costing him £35-40 per month for this, he gets the odd big name fight and may pay a PPV for this with some friends now and again.

Is he really going to pay another 25% of his current monthly Sky sub for a boxing channel that starts at 6:00pm, shows repeats of fights with guys he's never even heard of and choose that over his almost constant coverage of football ... doubt it.

Another thing I noticed on Saturday night, I watched the fight at my girlfriends dads, I asked if he would turn over to the fight...

a) he didn't even know the fight card had started.. maybe never even knew the fight was on.
b) he didn't know what BoxNation was, he skipped straight past it and stopped on Primetime, I had to ask him to skip back a channel to BoxNation.

This is your typical guy who has Sky Sports on 80% of the time he's watching TV.
