......how much will he have done in closing the gap on the number one super middleweight, Andre S.O.G. Ward? :think

    Bearing in mind the following:
    • Froch is still the same fighter that entered the ring against Ward (he hasn't deteriorated or anything).
    • He's facing Froch in his hometown, where his [Froch's] confidence and motivation will be at its highest.
    • Bute will be dealing a very hostile crowd, and the possibility that 100% fair officiating will not be a guarantee.
    • With the above three in consideration, it's safe to say: a dominant Bute win would be more impressive than the dominant Ward win, mainly because Bute would be facing a set of slightly more challenging circumstances.
So, if he does get that equally dominant win, how much would that do for his SMW ranking? What will your thoughts be if he goes one step further and gets a legit stoppage (unlikely, in my opinion)? Will he still be sitting firmly at number 2? Or would he become a 1.b?

That would soundly make anything Ward has accomplished so far to make him number one diminish. Bute has already shown in similar opponents that he's the better fighter when you compare the Bika fights. The Miranda fights. Ward has had the easiest road setup throughout the entire tourney. Bute and Ward both shared a cushy road to success, but Bute is finally getting his hands dirty to make himself known as the BAMF of SMW.

I'd like to see Bute KO Froch in his hometown. That would make a case for removing the idea of a rematch. Then I'd like to see him beat Dirrell. Fight Ward and if successful...retire Hopkins in a KO victory.

If Bute beats Froch , I don't think he will get ranked as the best SMW in the world (maybe he would , in boxrec's ratings). A win over Ward however it will ensure him the no1 spot in the division.

Unfortunatly Ward has Kessler also on his resumee. Big wins weight the most so normally he will still be at #2 BUT the manner of the win could change my and probably others minds to.

So I guess it depends a lot how will Bute look against Froch.
For example imagine if Bute Ko'es Froch in 4. Or if Froch hurts Bute and Lucian hardly survives and gets away with the win.

I could see a strong, strong argument for #1 if he were to stop Froch. It may not happen as once a guy gets entrenched at #1, he needs to be shaken out of there. However, Bute would be deserving of #1 status IMO.

The demand for Bute-Ward would increase immensely.

Yes, in most cases I tend to agree with that.

good question and I really cant pick an answer... personally I think the only way settle this is (IF) Bute looks good against Froch, then they have to fight for number 1 spot in the ring, against eachother, as it should be.

Yeah, the Kessler win would be what narrowly seperates them.

The manner in which Bute beats Froch is important. If he dominates and destroys him in a way none of us thought would be possible, then Ward's number one position would be under serious threat.

    But ultimately....

If Bute comprehensively beats Froch then he proves that he is the solid number two. Doesn't put him on Wards level who beat Froch comprehensively when he was a title holder and also comprehensively beat Kessler.

Agreed. All roads lead to this. All indications are that, providing they can iron out their contract situations with Showtime, it should happen late 2012, early 2013. Just get it done.

Let's be honest, that doesn't really mean jack all.

    Agree with the rest, though.

I like the 1b. Ward would still have a better win (Kessler) but the rest of Bute's resume is on par. I don't rate Abraham very high at SMW (in the same league as Magee). Green is totally **** (you won't hear me say that often of a boxer). Bika and Miranda are common opponents and Bute's wins against them are a bit more impressive. With Froch, that would be the third common opponent against whom Bute wins more impressively. If not 1b, let's say he would be second but Ward couldn't say he is the undisputed champion.

Bute has to do the job first though.
