If Calzaghe had picked opponents Froch style, how many defeats would he have had?

    I put 2.

Prime Jones and Hopkins would have beaten him without doubt. I would have said 3 for Toney, but I'm not decided on that one yet.

Calzaghe just didnt have the opponents out there. He came through while one generation of great MW's and SMW's were fading and before the next generation of mid-weight class fighters had arrived. Just bad timing.

  3. You don't believe that prime James Toney can beat a 7:0 or less fighter?

If Froch had fought Calzaghes opponents at the same stage, Froch would have lost to Hopkins, Kessler and Eubank all off the top of my head and also lost possibly one or more fights out of Mitchell, Veit or Woodhall.
Calzaghe fought Eubank for the a version of the World title when Calzaghe was 25 years old, Carl Froch at the same age was just starting fighting at that age against opponents with records of 4 wins 52 losses, 19 wins 36 losses, 8 wins 28 losses, 16 wins 55 losses, 9 wins 15 losses, im not cherry picking, these are the records of the opponents Froch was fighting when Calzaghe at the same age was winning a title against Eubank, no matter that Eubank was past his best when a young Calzaghe fought him, a 25 year old Froch would have been battered by Eubank at that stage they wouldnt even have allowed the fight to take place it would have been to dangerous for Froch health.

So Calzaghe fights who he fights and wins every bout, if Froch had fought the same opponents at the same age Calzaghe had fought them Froch would have lost 4 fights i estimate.

Now put the boot on the other foot, we know Froch has fought who he fought and lost twice, how many losses at the same age that Froch fought his opponents would Calzaghe have suffered, none, i say, Ward away would be the hardest one but i say Calzaghe wins by unanimous decision.

So Calzaghe losses 0 and Froch losses 2 when they fight their own opponents and when they fight each others opponents Calzaghe losses 0 and Froch losses 4.

Giving a total of fighting their own and each others opponents of Calzaghe 0 defeats, Froch 6 defeats.
Calzaghe is a lot better than Froch, i know people like Froch because he is great for the sport but if we are talking who's best resume or h2h then Joe Calzaghe is in a different league to Carl Froch.

Think Calaghe always had the workrate to make any version of Hopkins uncomfortable. Just a bad style matchup for B Hop.

Wouldn't shock me. Calzaghe won't be affected by Froch's power like Bute was or will he be thrown off by Froch's awkward style.

Most versions of Toney would have beat Calzaghe, as well as Jones, B-Hop, Ward and I believe Froch.

He wins all of them apart from Jones and possibly Ward.

One of the first things a new boxing fan should learn is Calzaghe would have never lost, no matter what! He can come back right now and destroy SMW - CW easily. The most dominant fighter to ever walk the earth. He'd even be the UFC HW champ if he wanted to not to mention win gold in Olympic judo.

"If Calzaghe had fought allcomers and all the best in sequence as a champion the way Froch does, how many would he have lost?

Steve Collins (assuming he hadnt retired with his illness).
puppet champ Ottke - inevitably in Germany with a cheating ref
prime Roy Jones - pretty much a guaranteed defeat
    prime James Toney
Robin Reid rematch that Reid deserved
    prime Bhop
    Marcus Bayer
    young Bute
    Robert Stieglitz
    Ward
    Hopkins rematch

I am going 4 definite defeats - Jones at the beginning of his career and fresh Ward at the end of his career, close loss to prime Bhop and loss to Ottke via his usual cheating in Germany, with draws versus Reid and Toney. "

Brilliant post and I agree with absoloutely everything you say except I think he would beat Ottke and possible lose to Toney.

As much as I agree, that Calzaghe spent too much of his career cherry picking opponents, I still think this entire thread is bollocks.

People are comparing Froch and Calzaghe, by estimating that Calzaghe would lose to future ATG's who had already left the SMW division before Calzaghe won his first world championship.

So Calzaghe is up against a talent pool that was not realistically available in his prime, and spans more than 15 years (1994-2011), whereas Froch is evaluated based on what was available in the last 3 years? (a much smaller talent pool)

Sure, had Calzaghe had all the many fights listed here, he would probably have as many defeats as Froch (or more). But he would also have faced an entirely different level of opposition.

Pascal took everything Froch had and imo B-hop was closer to stopping him then Froch. While I have to illusions about Calzaghe's overrated chin, Froch's power is as overrated.
