The specifics are important of course, but I'll still have a great deal of appreciation for what Calzaghe has managed to accomplish. He's one of the most determined athletes I've ever come across.

You're almost certainly correct about the outcome.

However, we know that Calzaghe is good, regardless of what you think he coulda/shoulda/woulda done with his career.

    The evidence ?

    Kessler. Hopkins. Lacy......

So, what would this mean ?

Clearly, it would mean that Roy, despite his last few showings, still has that greatness.

Did I think that Roy's earlier career was trashed when he unexpectedly suffered a crushing defeat at the hands of Tarver, a fighter he would have toyed with in his earlier days ?

    No.

I still regard Roy as the best of his generation. I just think he should have quit after Ruiz. (No later than Tarver (1))

If Roy should pull it off, it will diminish my estimation of Joe, but not by much. I'll probably decide he stayed too long (he'll be almost two years older than Roy was when Roy lost to Tarver ).

But, this is unlikely to happen.

    I expect Joe to win.

And the victory will have little effect on how I view either fighter.

It depends how it happens. If Jones wins i can really only see him winning a close fight. 8-4 at the most if Jones really does turn back the clock a significant amount.

Jones isn't what he was and were as Joe also isn't what he was, he is certainly a slight post peak fighter and not shot by any strech of the imagination so i can't see Jones dominating him. If Jones does however dominate him then i believe it will be because Joe got old over night. I know to some people that will sound like im making excuses for Joe but in all honesty can anyone expect Jones to dominate the Joe that recently fought Hopkins and Kessler?

A quick KO could happen. I know Joe has a sturdy chin but anything in boxing can happen. If this does happen then most will put it down to Joe getting caught cold. Very embarrasing but not legacy killing. Many a fighter have got Koed early and it hasn't greatly hindered their legacy.

If Jones wins a close fight, and like i said earlier this is the only way i see Jones winning, then it will say more about Roy's improvements post Tarver/Johnson than it does about Calzaghe not being as good as billed in my opinion as, to me atleast, its quite clear to see that Calzaghe is a very good fighter even if he does lose. Obviously it hurts Joe's legacy slightly but i think over time people will still look at Joe as a great fighter but will look at RJJ as so much better. It will also end the arguement of who would have won if they had fought in their primes.

Overall, if Jones does indeed win, in the after-math but even more so over time, it will be seen as a once great fighter who had lost the respect of many people and who seemed down and out but managed to turn back time and defeat another great fighter resulting in one of the great comebacks in ring history. Calzaghe's legacy will be knocked a bit but not to much.

    I'd say Joe is/was the 2nd best at super-middle
