Or is Joe's legacy already secured?

I'm not a Calzaghe fan, but there is absolutely NO WAY on God's green Earth that he will lose to RJJ in this fight.

It depends on the way he would lose. Getting knocked out at the age of 36 the same way Jones was flattened vs. Tarver wouldn't affect it that bad as being outclassed (Hopkins-Tarver) or outhassled (Jones-Johnson). Since Calzaghe is vulnerable in the early rounds and Jones is still a quick accuate puncher, we can't rule out the possibility of an early KO. But would it hurt his total domination in the SMW class for 10 years, incl. the big last 3 (Lacy, Kessler, historical unification) and the close Hopkins win for The Ring title at 175 and the P4P#2 spot? I don't think so... If he was a one-dimensional fighter or 'just a slapper', he would've been beaten by either a puncher (Lacy) a world class pure boxer (Kessler) or a smart, tricky and awkward ring master (Hopkins). You can't take that away from him. But having or not having Jones and Pavlik on his resume could make the difference in the end.

So losing to Jones wouldn't hurt his current legacy much - but it would hault his undefeated run and the possibility of a win over P4P-er Pavlik. He's career is not yet over...

In my opinion it would hurt because Jones has been brutally KOed Twice recently and has been fighting bums.

His legacy is secured, but if he loses it still affects what could have been a perfect record.

He might be remembered as someone who had no recognizable names on his record for the first 3/4 of his career, and lost to one of the only name fighters he ever fought, and an old one at that.

Not all losses are equal. If RJJ comes out and toys with him and then knocks him out, then his resume could come into question. It would be up to Mikkel, bad back, Kessler to bail him out.

Seriously, what Kessler does should be more telling.

Before we attempt to answer the question, let's put the Calzaghe/Jones fight in its proper historical context.

Calzaghe is on the record saying things like:
"Roy Jones was a great fighter. He is not a great fighter now."
"I have no interest in being the third person to knock jones out."
"Yes, ending my career with a Jones fight would be a bit of a disappointment."

Immediately after the first Pavlik/Taylor fight Joe called Pavlik out on international Television (HBO.) Before any other fights were made, and before Taylor confirmed his intention to excersize his rematch clause, Calzaghe made a fight with 43 year old Bernard Hopkins.

In a Sky Sports interivew immediately preceding the Hopkins fight Joe said he would fight one more time after BHop, and he wanted Pavlik, unless Taylor beat him, in which case he wanted JT.

During this same period Pavlik said he wanted Calzaghe "before he gets one day older."

Pavlik scored a second victory over the man who beat Hopkins twice.

Calzaghe squeaked out a controversial split decision over Hopkins. Declared himself a "Legend Killer," and said he would fight Roy Jones.

Pavlik destroyed Joe's stablemate and sparring partner. Afterward Max Kellerman asked Pavlik about fighting Calzaghe. Pavlik grinned from ear to ear and ask the crowd, "Is that what you wanna see?" The crowd roared back with a resounding YES.

Team Pavlik wanted the fight, Bob Arum wanted the fight, HBO wanted the fight, and Frank Warren wanted the fight. Calzaghe fired Warren, made a fight with Roy Jones, and said it would be his last.

Calzaghe caught massive criticism over his choice. Even the British press started slamming Joe. Then Calzaghe said Jones may not be his last fight. He might stick around for one more and it MIGHT be Pavlik. However, Joe made an ass of himself by making it sound like Pavlik had been calling him out when the reverse was the truth.

Joe's next move was to announce that he was injured and had to postpone the Jones fight. And that brings us up to date.

If Jones were to beat Calzaghe, that would leave Joe 1-1 against faded legends. His very best win would be a controversial split decision over a 43 year old Hopkins. His second best would be over the relatively obscure Mikkel Kessler who fought with a serious hand injury.

If Roy Jones beats Calzaghe the loss would severely damage an already questionable lagacy. If Jones beats Calzaghe, and Pavlik KO's Hopkins, Joe has no legacy.
