if calzaghe only slaps, why didn't hopkins walk him down?

joecal has very bad punching technique. he's more interested in scoring points than landing a solid, hard, telling blow that will put his opponent in trouble. his style is probably suited more to amateur boxing than anything else. no wonder he has very fast hand speed. he just slaps his punches out there. hopkins was never once even staggered during that fight and calzaghe threw and landed much more punches.

calzaghe won this one based on activity, being the aggressor and landing more. but the more significant clean, solid and hard punches were definitely landed by hopkins.

Give me a break. Calzaghe has better acheivements at 168, because that's all he fought at. Roy Jones was champion at 160, 168, 175, and Heavyweight. By the way, he wasn't winning the garbage WBO belts either.

Between Jones and Calzaghe, there is no contest. At 160, 168, or 175, Roy Jones would destroy him, plain and simple.

Honestly I disagree with you guys. At the end of the fight towards the later rounds Hopkins was laughing when Joe was throwing his "bombs". The thing about Joe is that his game plan involves throwing as much punches as he can even if they are just taps. I still dont give him credit, the day he actually throws 100 power shots per round like Margarito Ill call him a great

If people watch closely they see that Calzaghe straightens up his punches every so often and hurts his opponents. He "slaps" for the same reason many other fighters jab - to open up his opponents guard. And Calzaghe has a decent jab, come to think of it - he was effective in spots with it last night.

Its ****ing common sense you know nothing idiots. He could take Calzaghe's shots any time. If he came in forward and walked him down that fits into Calzaghe scoring more and that is not BHops style..Why make it easy when you can counter a sloppy off balance fighter like Calzaghe by just moving side to side with lateral movement. Something that befuddled Calzaghe and made him miss punches by miles...LEARN BOXING 101

That would have been great if Hopkins actually threw and landed more than a handful of punches.

After I think it's 8 fractures in his left hand ys he does slap and go for accumulation of shots, look at his stoppages earlier in career, remember 3 years ago hm fighting 8 rounds with ne hand and had broken other, he has extremely brittle left hand that's why he doesn't uppercut and hook eithr.

That right hand in the first was great but did you watch the rest of the fight? Really hard to say "many ****ing right hands it was ridiculous". Maybe 3 or 4 more after that first one?

Yeah, but that was years ago when he was much younger and fresher. He's FREAKIN 43 years old.

The reason why he didn't walk him down is because at this stage to be honest it doesn't matter if the shots hurt you or not.

The fast hands, coupled with the slapping motion....well I don't know about you but if you walk a man down with those attributes that's a REAL good way to get a nice mouse from cumulative shots. At Hopkins limited physical peak(being 43) you really don't need anything else to physically go wrong.

Hopkins did what he needed to do to win the fight, but so did Calzaghe.
I would say, Calzaghe imposed more of his youth and will which in the end tipped the scales in his favour.

It was a close fight, not a robbery, not a "sham"... the scores were somewhat accurate(116-111 wtf?!?).

I would have been perfectly fine with 115-112 across the board in Calzaghes favor.
