If Calzaghe rejects Jones for Pavlik, will he still be a "ducker"?

Joe has a reputation for ducking the big fights all his career, if he ducks Roy Jones Jnr, a legend of the game to fight a young fairly inexperienced fighter like Pavlik - will it harm his legacy?

Pavlik is regarded as the best middleweight out there but has only really fought Miranda (at a push) and Taylor that are relevent on the major world scene.
    • Joe ducked Glen Johnson to fight Tocker Pudwill
    • He didn't fight Sven Ottke, but he fought Miguel Jimenez
    • He took a fight with Lacy when Mundine was the better style challenge
    • Boxed Manfredo and Bika while Kessler fought Beyer and Andrade
    • Took a payday against Kessler when Bute and Hopkins were blatently better options
    • Fought Bernard Hopkins 6 years after he should have
So with his track record of protecting himself, is he doing it again choosing Pavlik over Jones? Is he catching Pavlik before he is ready and letting Roy Jones slide a little bit more before "the time is right"?

If he rejects a Jones fight his team is very stupid. Least risk and higher payday.

if he fight Jones, he is a coward, if Pavlik is such a one dimentional fighter, go for it

    • Lacy was the next Tyson at the time.
    • Kessler was the best out there at the time.
    • Bika was a good test.
    • Manfredo was a crappy match up and i fully agree why on each did JC fight him.
    • BHop avoided JC.
    • Sven isn't in his league and needs to prove himself more.
    • Glenn Johnson maybe you have a point, but did JC duck him or was it boxing politics.

Joe isn't a ducker but i think a fight with Pavlik would better for his legacy.

I'm a bit disappointed. Pavlik is a middleweight and Jones is a light heavy who has boxed at heavy so you can see why Joe would favour Pavlik. I was actually hoping he'd fight Tarver, Dawson or Johnson. I think they stand a much better chance of beating him than Pavlik but I can understand that it's partly about money.

The only way Calzaghe won't be a ducker is if he fights a LHW (the only respectable division he has fought in).

    So that leaves

    Antonio Tarver
    Chad Dawson
    Glenn Johnson
    Roy Jones Jr.

What glory is there in getting a MW to move to SMW or LHW, ie fighting a smaller man, fight a peer.

    • Your points are good but I disagree with 3 and 5. They were the only time Joe actually went and took a risk in fighting one of the best guys out there.

Too much credit is given to Lacy wins. Don't give me that US people were loving Lacy crap either. I didn't give a damn about the fight because SMW is a weak division.

Lacy was a fellow world champ, and a dangerous one at that; it was pretty much the best fight he could make in the division.

You've got to give plenty of credit given that it was one of the most one-sided unification fights you could ever wish to see.

Lacy may not have been the best but it was good that Calzaghe finally fought for a genuine world title. Lacy was rated number three by The Ring if I remember correctly so it seems silly to have a go at him for noty fighting Mundine.

Don't get me wrong Jones was one of the best but since the fights with
Tarver and Glen Johnson he shouldn't been in the top of the P4P rankings
If Calzaghe fight's him and wins it wouldn't mean much for the fans
everyone would say that Jones was too old and out of shape.
Pavlik is nr 1 in middleweight and a young star
Mabye a win of Calzaghe over Pavlik would he huge in 10 years.
Maybe Pavlik would have a record of 50-1 or something like that
and Calzaghe would be the one who beat him.

rjj does nothing for calzaghe's career at this point, save for adding a recognizable name to his ledger. dawson/pavlik would be a better option.

He should fight Pavlik cause if doesn't, people will say he ducked him.
