The biggest legacy fight for him out there at the moment is against Tarver.

That is not to say that it is the fight that will generate the most public interest.

Why? He already beat Hopkins who schooled Tarver. It's not obvious why beating Tarver himself adds a great deal.

Pavlik is the biggest fight in terms of legacy, then roy jones, tarver is way down the lists.

Tarver is pretty much done IMHO. A win for Calzaghe wouldn't compare to a win over Pavlik.

You have to ask what win would do the most for Calzaghes historic standing.

In the light of history the best that he could do with a single fight would be to put his claim to the lineal light heavyweight title beyond question. That could bge best achieved by beating either Tarver or Eredi.

Pavlik might be a big name now but in 50 years time a win over Pavlik would count for little unless Pavlik becomes an all time pound for pound great because it will not get Calzaghe any title.

How is Cazaghes claim to the lineal LHW title in any doubt? He beat the man who beat the man.

I'd actually enjoy that one. Nevermind legacy or whatever. I think it would be good. Calzaghe with the fragile hands not trying to tee off too early left trying to counter Pavlik (successfully) as he tries to walk forward and smash Joe to bits. I think it would make for an entertaining 6-7 rounds.

DM was lineal...Gonzalez beat him and he was beaten by Erdei...

for me Erdei pretty much lost the right to be known as the man after fighting so many **** opponents..

As others have said, he undoubtedly beat the best 175 pounder in the world in Hopkins, but a rival claim still exists and it is not certain which claim historians will come down in favour of in 50 years.

Calzaghe has two options if he wants to be certain of securing the lineage.

He could fight Erdei and unify the two rival claims or the could fight Tarver (for the IBF title and a win over the highest ranked fighter in the division that he has not beaten) and hope the Erdei's claim withers on the vine.

This is history we are talking about.

The problem is who ever he fights is never enough, so he goes and beats Pavlik the young tough Champ....well he just beat Kessler the young tough Champ, then its ''Kessler was straight forward one dimensional''.... so is ****ing Pavlik for ****s sake.

There is no LEGENDS to kill around his weight, Hopkins (old no credit), RJJ (old no credit), Tarver (far from legend and a overrated) etc etc, so he must go after the young champions, Dawson / Pavlik, are they enough to cement his legacy, for me yes, more than enough, all you can do is beat the best around you and they are the best in respective divisions. (saying that i think Pavlik / Kessler is a proper good fight).

Joe will beat Pavlik, it may not be too easy only due to Kelly's ungodly power, he may have to get up, but thats what Kings do, they get up dust off and crack on.

Pavlik is a Champion and Champions dont beat Kings.

    I totally agree.

He is caught in a difficult position. Whoever he fights and beats he will still not get maximum praise for it, for there will always be people who will pick holes in the credibility of the man challenging him.

The hardest challenge out there for him would probably be Dawson, but in the current climate it is a high-risk low-reward bout for Joe.

Time might be the factor with Joe's legacy: if Kessler goes on to do great things then it will reflect well on Joe that he beat him. Same thing if he beats Dawson, and then Chad rebounds well (this works for the Pavlik argument if Kelly lost to Joe but continued to do well at SMW and LHW after the loss).
