I was wondering who Calzaghe could have fought during his career that would have made his record more impressive - or "ATG" standard. Calzaghe won the WBO Super Middlewight title in October 1997 from a good former Champion, Chris Eubank. He was setup to fight Steve Collins, but he retired rather than risk a fight with Calzaghe. The big names of the late 80s/early 90s had retired, or moved to other weight divisions, but there was another batch of decent British supper-middles coming through -most of whom Calzaghe beat. So I had a look to see who were the super-middle big names over the last ten years. These were the champions between 1998-2007. (W) signifies that Calzaghe beat them: WBA - Liles, Mitchell (W), Girard, Ottke, Siaca, Kessler (W) WBC - Malinga, Woodhall (W), Beyer, Catley, Thobela, Lucas, Sanavia, Kessler (W) IBF - Ottke, Lacy (W), Bute And these were the other prominent fighters in that weight class: Reid (W), Brewer (W), Sheika(W), Vanderpool, Glen Johnson, Green, Mundine Now, of that list the only fighters that I would think could improve Calzaghe's record are Ottke and Glen Johnson - however Johnson's sucesss was at light-heavyweight, leaving only Ottke as a significant omission. So who could Calzaghe have reasonably fought that would have made you impressed with his record? Would the likes of Mundine or Beyer have impressed you anymore than Woodhall or Reid?
you've missed the bigger picture totally. i've posted it in detail so many times and i'm not doing it again.
Beating Dawson would do a lot, shut people up more than anything but Chad needs Joe, not the other way around, no need to say any more.
Nobody will care if he beats Dawson. Barely anyone knows who Dawson is at this point on a broad scale. Similiar to when Cotto vs Floyd was being thrown around, me being a Cotto fan I was saying Cotto needed more time to build his name to make the fight that much bigger. This would be another "Young Underdog vs Legend" scenerio when it should be a "Great vs Great", which is a status Dawson hasn't reached just yet.
The fight with Dawson will and SHOULD happen in Wales, there's no interest in America these days so make it happen there please. Also, Calzaghe doesn't really need that fight to prove anything, yes it will be a huge fight and one I would love to see but he doesn't really NEED it. He's already established and a HOF'er for sure.
No one else is there to take that spot, Calzaghe already said that he's not interested in rematches with either Jones or Hopkins so this is the fight to make if he wants to continue fighting and this is a fight Dawson needs to build his self and also prove his self to the public.
A thousand apologies, O Wise One, I have neglected to follow your preachings. Thank you for graciously posting that you have no intention to post on the question though.
I don't know why Dawson has ascended so much since beating a shot to hell Tarver. He's not good enough to beat Joe. Joe should give a rematch to Bernard.
That is BS logic. So people always go on about how Joe needed to go to the US to fight Hopkins and Jones, coz they were the bigger names and were the 'bigger' champions. But when it comes to Calzaghe-Dawson, Joe needs to go to the US? Gimme a ****ing break. You don't half talk some crap about Calzaghe Axe.
Calzaghe is a hall of famer, the only people who argue with that are yanks. If Calzaghe beat Dawson around a ring all night long those same yanks would simply say that dawson was an overhyped sack of ****, and that beating him proved nothing.
im sorry axe but you are wrong, if joe c did not get into the HALL first ballet it would be extreamly strange wait 10 years after he is fully retired and everyone will understand at the mo there are alot of angry haters who could have joe carry on another 10 years if he did not lose but he has done enough
