American critics and experts can be very very hard on their own fighters, because they expect much out of them. They expect a certain caliber of competitors, given the greats like SRR, SRL, Hearns, Hagler, Ali, Frazier, Joe Louis, Rocky, Pea, and the list goes on and on. Do you see how badly they hate on Mayweather and Mayweather accomplished more than Calzaghe! For a while they were hard on RJJ and that was after he beat B-Hop, Toney, and Dominated in spectacular fashion as a SMW. So no, Joe Calzaghe would be criticized with the resume he has, but if he came out of America he would've fought the competition that being in the States, would have brought, especially in the mid and late 90's, when Joe was reaching his peak.
If Calzaghe were American, he wouldn't be undefeated, because he wouldn't have been so protected and coddled for all those years against bums in Wales. Calzaghe might talk a lot of crap about Frank Warren, but deep down, he thanks him every night.. without his easy matchmaking, he wouldnt be 46-0
Floyd Mayweather gets criticized every goddamn day and his resume is twice what Calslaps is. Chad Dawson is only 26 and has a comparable resume to Joe Calzaghe.
In a big probablity . . . yes . . . he could be a legend because he could have fought named and rated fighters all the way.
He wouldn't have been so protected, and would have been beaten up long ago. He's been tucked away fighting basically nobodies his whole career. :bart
bingo. i'm no joyboy but the guy is one of the most reviled fighters there is, with legions of critics hell bent on denigrating his career, with an some wishing bodily harm upon him, and this guy's career has had a better career than joe.
Agreed. It could go either way though - a few losses and overall better level of competition could raise his standing, depending on how he looked in doing it. One thing for sure though, if he didn't have local support in Wales (ie was American) he'd be lucky to have fought in a room with a camera crew in it for most of his career.
