Calslappy, Calfaggi, home loving, hypejob ..... - take your pick.

If fate had taken Sardinian Enzo Calzaghe to America instead of Wales, would Joe Calzaghe have been labelled with any of the above.

If the same list of fighters made up his resume but they were defeated at a venue such as MSG instead of Cardiff Ice Rink how would he be viewed by those who disparage him now?

We wouldn't be talking about him.

He woulda been forced to face someone like RJJ, Toney or B-Hop in their primes - and gone the Naseem Hamed route!

    :D

Truthfully, though, people should get over this whole "American" and "European" bull ****. Their more racist (or is it, nationalist?) than Hopkins.

I haven't followed his career for long, but I think it depends on his personality and attitude toward his career accomplishments. Being an American-born fighter does not make you immune to criticism, in fact, it makes you more susceptable to it. On one hand he could be a Floyd Mayweather who is hated by most because of his personality, but respected because of his skills. On the other hand he could be a Rocky Marciano who is loved by all because of his heart, grit, and personality - and in some ways overrated because of his amiableness. It all depends on how people relate to his personality in general. I don't know how his attitude is, so I can't say if he would be despised or not, but I just felt that I should lay the criteria out there for those who are familiar with him.

Toney was at Cruiser when Calzaghe was actually fighting at the top of the division, your whole argument is now voided out because of the failure to recognise that fact, yet still demanding he'd have tried to face Toney.

Yeah, what in the blue HELL was I thinking! Calzaghe would NEVER look outside the comfort of his weak ass division for a challenge. Brewer's, Pudwill's, Jimenez's, Thornberry's... The only guys he'd ever need...

No way Calzaghe gets 20 title defences in America :deal

Just imagine prime for prime Calzaghe vs Toney and Hopkins.

Now imagine Calzaghe just decides to counterpunch.

Now imagine Hopkins and Toney not knowing what the hell to do with this superior athlete, this superior technician.

If Joe never injured his left, he'd be at the top of any division he tried at plus the american sports wrters would give him recognition in USA, and Stephen Smith would have had him on " Quite Frankly ".... maybe

Calzaghe could have fought in America against the big stars if he had really wanted to, one way or another. You don't have to be born in America to make it in America.

RJJ "moved up". Toney "moved up". Even long-time division reigner B-Hop "moved up"...

With B-Hop just below, RJJ just above and Toney at Cruiser (who was having serious negotiations with B-Hop at middle for a stage)... Your saying that Calzaghe would have been hiding at 168 the ENTIRE time?

    Doesn't surprise me.
