Good points. *Like I said, I know little of the divisions history as I loathe it. Upon some reading, I must say Toney really did have a good run there. But Jones was Jones. He beat Toney but that was it. For my money, Alvarez unifying the division would do more for him legacy wise when it comes down to the 168lb division. In terms of scalps, no one right now comes close to what Toney was back then. No one even registers on that level. Besides Alvarez.
Callum Smith is a monster. Not only did he tower over him but he had a 7½ " reach advantage over Canelo. Now granted Smith didn't use the jab, but he clearly had a massive size and reach advantage.
Not based on that alone. To become an top dog at a certain weight class, you have to either spend a long stretch there, or really carve out a niche by beating great fighters there. I think neither will be the case for Canelo. He probably won’t stay there long enough to make those inroads. Nor do I think the fighters at the top, currently, bring enough cache at the weight. Benavides may at some point, but even with him it would likely be at LHW. Reading the landscape, I don’t think Canelo would remain there long enough to get there. All things considered, SMW is a very young division. Which is why we can even discuss a guy with a handful of fights at the weight possibly being among the top guys all time at the weight.
There are good fights for him beyond Saunders/Plant. If Charlo-Benavidez fight, the winner of that fight vs Canelo is HUGE. If Canelo comes through all those fights, Morrell will hopefully have had a few more fights and seasoned into a top 168lbs'er as well. GGG 3 is still an option. Plenty in the next couple of years for him. Bivol could even come down
You think? Hmmm. If Canelo can beat Saunders, Plant, GGG 3, Benavides/Charlo winner and Bivol? That’s some serious hay being made. I stil think he is more likely to push north again into LHW, as some of those guys are likely to be there as well, but I can see the logic. Also, with some of those guys, the lower weight works in Canelo’s favor, so, there’s that. Consider me somewhat swayed.
He was hesitant because he knew about Smith's left hook and didn't want to leave himself open which was evident in round 7 when he got clipped with it and stopped
It's not just the last letter in your name that makes me think you are pro Mexican. This is not a strong division apart from possibly Benvanidez, do where do you get number 1 after a handful of fights?
