I don't think he ducked Ward. GGG has always maintained he wanted to unify the division and has remained steadfast on the objective. I don't think Alvarez waited until GGG got old. GGG started his pro career late so he was always a bit behind the 8 ball. His prime years, physically began when he turned pro. But right now he's gotten to a level where his skills and craft have peaked. Nelo is at his physical prime and peak so this fight happened at the perfect time. It's no ones fault GGG is 35. He may be a little slower at this stage but his skills and abilities are at an all time high.
