If clinching was more harshly punished, how does HW history change?

Sammy 'The Clutch' Angott made a career of it.

Wlad did make a career out of holding to nullify in fighting.

I don't see how that relates to what I've said.

Do you like to see clinching?

Holding and leaning which in turn wears out an opponent massively.

My point is a fighter who utilises these tactics like Wlad would happily give away rounds knowing the massive benefit it gives them down the stretch.

Nobody does but it has always been part of the game and would be very difficult to police if it was a foul.

Getting tied up and/or the ref constantly breaking them is one aspect an inside fighters team really will argue prevents their fighter from winning.

If fighters are prevented from holding entirely then they are also prevented from fighting at a very close, shoulder to shoulder range.

You are then only left with a long range fight.

it IS a foul. Clinching has ALWAYS been a foul.

The rules of boxing are so ludicrously simple. Practically everything other than hitting the target area with the knuckle part of the glove (with sufficient force) is a foul or worthy of a warning. If it's not boxing, it's a foul. Simple as that.

Mauling, leaning, holding and hitting, pushing, shouldering, rabbit punching, resting your open hands on anything, intentionally or not, all of it is against the rules. You can't hold the ropes. You can't turn a fighter. You can't turn round. Because it is not boxing.

    It's really, really simple.

It reallly isn't that simple, that's why we are having this debate.

Why haven't we heard Richard Steele over the years disqualifying fighters instead of saying the words "Punch and get out."

Excessive clinching is a foul. Decided upon by the ref.

Clinching in general is a part of the sport. Has been forever. Watch Dempsey Tunney....1926 as just one example. If it was a foul why was not Tunney DQed? Why wasn't Walcott DQed prior to being koed by Marciano? The list is endless all through boxing history.

Excessive clinching (holding) is a foul but left up to the ref to interpret.

Maybe they could introduce a 3 second or 5 second in holds count......

I didn't say it was a foul. I said if it's overly negative and should cost someone a round.
