If Billy Conn had gotten through the last few round s in his first fight with Louis and being proclaimed the new Champion ? How would this have changed his legacy ?First light heavy champ to move up and beat the heavy champ ,and actually get a win over Joe in his prime ? Where would Conn now stand in light heavyweight s ranks ?
I think that comparisons with Ezzard Charles would be made. Also much depends upon what happens next. Does Louis get the title back fairly promptly, or do things go down another path?
I agree with Janitor- what happens in the rematch? In what fashion does the winner win? Also consider Louis' legacy would be historically diminished at that point. Certainly Conn's standing would be raised considerably, regardless of the outcome of the rematch. He would have done it. Lifted the Championship from Louis. Conn is already underrated as it is.
There s def a few question s I agree .Would there be an immediate rematch or does Conn decide to give some one else a shot ,maybe an easier opponent !? How does it affect Joe ,he came back after Max S but could he do it now ? Conn's legacy is mike spinks x 100 if he beats Louis ,Spinks caught Larry who'd seen better years . It would certainly put him up there as the best of Joes challenger's !
