Well, he definitely wouldn't have gotten careless with Joe and tried to slug with or finish Louis off, that's for sure.
I think Gene gives him a lot of problems he won't be careless as Conn did, I think Louis would slowly close the gap and get him out of there within 10 rounds.
Did Conn get careless or did Louis just catch him? I think it is certainly open to some interpretation.
no its not. Conn started trading with 30 punch combination, you don't trade with a puncher, Conn knew that at the beginning but got over confident, because of his sucess.
No it was the fact that Conn decided to have a fight with Louis instead of boxing on the move like he was earlier in the fight, Watch this video and if you still don't think Conn got careless then I don't what to make of you, look at the amonunt of times Conn goes right into Louis chest and stay on the inside, he's not forced into it he does this choose's this tactic himself, when he does get hurt first its Louis back whos against the ropes and Conn is in the position to step back into the center of the ring but instead decides to fight fire with fire. Against the ropes... they were trading pretty much in the center of the ring when Conn first got hurt. This came a round after Conn clearly hurt Joe and had him in a tough spot holding on.
Tunney studied Dempsey for several years before their fight happened. If Tunney is given that luxury, he would beat Louis in the first fight, then lose to Louis in the rematch. If Schmeling can beat Louis....then Tunney could too.
You are missing two important points here: 1. A lot of Conns sucess throughout the fight was due to pressing Louis on the inside. It is an important part of why he gave Louis trouble. 2. Judges of the period tended not to be overly sympathetic to fighters who ran and fought to survive. Conn's strategy worked where more defensivley minded fighters failed, but maybee just maybee, he ran out of aces in the pack.
I give the ice cold Tunney a great chance , and I think he hit hard enough to hurt and, possibly drop Louis with his quick right cross. Intruiging matchup.:goodprobably makes for a split series of three fights.
