You're point is very definitely not lost on me.

And what would Ali have done if he schooled Holmes?

Some one not too dangerous, Marty Monroe or Tex Cobb?

Exactly. They also would have screwed more money out of Tex than he was worth via the White/White angle.

Whats the betting that Cooney would have found a way to loose to Cobb?

acually I always thought Tex Cobb was a good fight for Cooney. Tex had a solid jaw and took Earnie Shavers best and Tex was easy to hit. I think Cooney would have gotten the needed 10-15 rd work and stamina confidence, unless he got to Cobb with a hook to the body. Remember Cooney only fought 1 rd in 2 yrs going into the Holmes fight. He needed that fight before Holmes but the Wacko's were not going to take a chance, they wanted the payday. I guess you really can not blame them because they all got one. Had Gerry beat Holmes they would have dug up some of the less dangerous fighters like Berbick,Cobb,Tillis and avoided the same fighters Larry did. Cooney could have gone on a tour of the U.S.A. fighting a import in every state and making money. The public started to know the Cooney name, had he beat Holmes he would have been making tremendous money to fight and TV commercials. Cooney was white and American. I dont think Gerry himself feared anyone but his managers were over protective.

Cobb lacked the buzz. Cooney was not only Irish, White and American...he was from New York, and an accomplished amateur who won the gold gloves in NY, and KO'd one of the best Russian fighters in the amateurs in Madison Square Garden. Oddly enough, Cooney was media shy.

Had Cooney beaten Holmes, his phone would have been ringing off the hook.

After the beating he took from Greg Page, Monroe was no longer a threat to the title.:good

He also had a terrible image. Cobb harbored too much of a bad ass, party animal persona to ever be considered a poster boy as America's next great white hope. His victories also lacked that sort of lightening decisiveness that was showcased in some of Cooney's best performances. He was actually losing the Shavers fight, until Earnie basically gassed in the later rounds. This was nothing like Cooney's chilling stoppages of Norton and Lyle. No way could Cobb ever do to those guys what Cooney did...

Yes Cooney got attention because he was a big white guy that could punch but he was also from New York the biggest media center in the World. That also had a lot to do with the attention he was getting. The New York media really pushed him. He had both critics and people that thought he was legit.

Cooney's management was awful as far as developing him as a fighter but they made him money that no other contender has ever made in the history of the sport.

His career is like an enigma he never reached his full potential due to a variety of reasons. Was a Holmes rematch ever even discussed? There have been rematches for fights that were not near as competitive as the Holmes/Cooney fight was.

Maybe some of the older posters can fill us in on this?

And he didn't either. But I must say that I liked the war Cobb had with an old Ken Norton more than Cooney destroying him.

If Scott Frank was Cooney's next opponent, they both should be taken down and assassinated.

EXACTLY. they probably would have tried to entice Ali out of retirement so Gerry could have said he was better than him because he ko'd him. My fav. memorie of Cooney is from In Living Color when Jim Carrey played him and he walks into a room and some guy sayd hello to everyone by doing the old pushpunch on the chin. He does it to old men, kids, etcWhen he does it to Carrey's Cooney, Cooney's head turns as if poleaxed, blood squirts out of his mouth and he is unconcious in seconds. Spot on man:boxxThe classy one has spoken
