the trouble was the white-hope angle just made cooney too big a draw too soon. cooney had a champions following without being a champion. he was bigger among the wider media (unjust as it was) than the champion. Good rated contenders who could have given him rounds would want too much money to fight cooney (why risk their rating against another contender?) so they knew what they were worth and priced themselves out. the managers obviously felt a 50-50 risk against a live contender was as great a risk as fighting the champion himself anyway and were forced to take that chance. I dont know if angelo dundee could have done anything diferent..cooney just got too big too soon.

Vic Valle only had so much power...... I'm sure Vic wanted more action for Gerry, but managers "Jones and Rappaport" were merely interested in securing the big deal with Don King and Larry Holmes........ Mike and Dennis knew Cooney's skin would sell whether he was active or not...... But, of course we all know Gerry needed more work going into his fight with Holmes.......

STILL! Cooney fought a gallant fight despite being green........ I love reviewing "Holmes-Cooney" when I'm tweaking.......

Here is the deal with Cooney Valle was a competent trainer but I don't understand why he never bothered to teach Cooney how to clinch or develop the right hand. The game plan for the Holmes fight itself was atrocious try and go the distance and out box Holmes?:rofl:patsch Cooney would just push his right when he threw it it was very weak.

Cooney needed rounds against contenders before fighting Holmes which he did not get for whatever reasons. Part of it was Cooney himself was reluctant to fight he had several canceled fights before the Holmes fight that would have given him rounds and experience. They should have fought Weaver before Holmes it was a winnable fight for Cooney.

We never saw Cooney's full potential and either way I still don't think he beats Holmes anyway. Also, the attention he got from the media was partly because he was from NY the media capital of the World not solely because he was white and could punch.

I don't know if Angelo was the guy for him, the biggest technical shortcoming I thought he had was his snapless jab. As his fights went into the later rounds his jab became more lame, there was just not an end on them. Seeing what Stewart has done with W.K. in perfecting his jab he's the guy I would have loved to see train Cooney for a years before the Holmes go.

Well, I was not involved in Cooney's training at all back in 1982, but, it is obvious that while Vic Valle was not thrilled with Gerry boy being inactive, I can tell you that Vic had some damn tuff sparring partners in the gym doing their best to rough up and prepare Gerry for his date with destiny on June 11, 1982.........

No way in hell a green Cooney could do that well with Larry Holmes had he not been grilled hard in camp by Valle and the sparring partners, etc.......

Cooney lost in the end, but he was gallant all through........

    Vic Valle did his job........

No possible way. Cooney just didn't have the chin or the athleticism to be an all-time great. Also, many believe Dundee was/is an overrated trainer.

How would Cooney have done with Freddie Roach or Manny Steward as a trainer? Better. But still, no great trainer could have rectified Cooney's defensive flaws. Leaky defense and a vulnerable chin point to a single inevitable ending in the long run for a heavyweight.

Had Cooney lived up to his full potential, he would have been hot and cold. He would have iced some top fighters with his devastating left hook. Simultaneously, Cooney would have lost big fights to other guys who were simply too talented for him.

Still, Cooney could have had an exciting, mercurial run at the top, for several years, too. Cooney could even have won a piece of the title. He certainly had a devastating offensive.

His managers sucked. They didnt have the confidane in Cooney to have him fight top notch guys and that reflected back on Jerry. It always made his confidance in himself shakey.

With Dundee he may have found the way to win against Holmes , Spinks and Foreman (if Dundee chose him over Foreman) :yep .
