If Cotto beats Canelo and retires would he be a top 100 ATG? Or is he already a top 100 ATG?

I've always liked Cotto but honestly this is the 3rd catchweight bout in a row. I'm getting ****ed.

No. I wouldn't even say he is an ATG anything, let alone top 100. I can't take his MW run seriously, and his last two titles were obtained vs crippled opposition.

Nah don't mix up popularity and paper titles with ability.

What's his best win an old faded Mosley or an old faded Martinez. Other than them his best wins are an exposed Margarito who had just taken a bad beating off Pac or Judah coming off 2 losses and an NC.

Cotto was never really a dominant champion, just a good title holder among better fighters/champions. His reign as middleweight champion is a joke, ducking Golovkin, weight draining Geale and now facing a guy who's fought as a light middle.

Even a win over Canelo doesn't put him top 100 for me.

Without the catchweight, he'd have earned alot more respect, but still has quite the challenge against the red headed crusher. Cotto would be top 100, just 75-100. He'd have accomplished alot, but too many fighters who would have beat him h2h. At the sametime, he basically did lose to the best of his generation, Floyd and Pacman, and struggled in fights he should have won clearly, (Torres, Clottey, Trout, Mosley), had to lowblow Judah to slow him down in the early rounds, but almost never in a boring fight.

the Cotto hate is still strong. He's definitely top 120 ATG. With 3 more wins, he enters the top 75. Cotto had too many great victories and a top resume to be denied.

If Cotto manages to beat Alvarez without a doubt he should be considered an ATG fighter, and is already an ATG PR fighter.

Ppl can try to down play his recent run he's the Legitimate MW Champ regardless if you like it or not and cow or not if he beat Alvarez he'll have the best resume at MW and really in 2 fight's arguably already does.

I do agree with you. However it's kind of like the BCS was in college football. If you beat the top team, great, kudos. But what if you didn't belong there? Cotto is a great fighter but the catchweight stuff is kinda ridiculous while you are holding a belt. The MW limit is 160. He won it at 159, defended at 157, now defending at 155. Getting ridiculous.

    In terms of accomplishments, perhaps.

In terms of quality, there's definitely been over 100 fighters in history who were better than Miguel Cotto.

H2H, he doesnt fare very well against many atg's.

    Is Cotto great or good?

I never viewed Cotto as a great fighter, just a really good fighter.

I can see your point I'm not to big on catch weight fight's but between those 3 only the Alvarez one is really bad. 155 is a non title JMW fight imo. As far as the MW Title Martinez won the title at a cw, Hopkins unified 4 MW titles at a catch weight vs Hoya. Ect.... So it's not anything new for the division.

Me personally I'm not even big on Cotto but it is what it is.
